week nine: when sh*t starts getting real ...

"Every night I say a prayer,
In the hopes that there's a heaven.
Every day I'm more confused,
As the saints turn into sinners.

All the heroes and legends, I knew as a child?
Have fallen to idols of clay.
And I feel this empty place inside --
So afraid, that I've lost my faith.

Show me the way!
Show me the way!
Take me tonight to the river?
And wash my illusion away!

And please show me the way ...

Show me the way!
Show me the way!
Bring me tonight to the mountain,
And take my confusion away!

And please show me the way ...

Show me the way!
Show me the way!
Give me the strength and the courage,
To believe I'll get there someday!

And please show me the way ...

Please show me the way ..."

The Statisticals.

Last Week SU: 13-2-0.  Holy God.
Season to Date SU: 72-48-1.

Last Week ATS: 10-5-0.  Sweet Jesus.
Season to Date ATS: 68-52-1.

Last Week Upset / Week: For the record, I agreed with punting it on 4th down, with five to play.  The fact that it didn't work out?  Does not mean it was the wrong thing to do.  If you can't stop a team when they're pinned at their two, in the nuthouse known as Arrowhead, that ain't your offense's fault.  And it certainly ain't the only reason we were even in that game's fault -- that reason of course, being "Fat" Andy Reid.

Season to Date Upset / Week SU: 5-4-0.
Season to Date Upset / Week ATS: 6-3-0.

This Week Upset / Week: I really love two 'dogs to win outright this week ... because neither of them should be home dogs.  Especially the first one.  So give me the Steelers (+1) over the Colts, and the Ravens (+3) over the Patriots.

--------------------

The Non-Chiefs Picks.

* Byes: Rams, Bengals, "Shane" Falcons, Saints.  Who's ready for that awesome Thanksgiving Night debacle between the "Shane" Falcons and Saints!  You'd have thought last year's Thanksgiving Night debacle between the worthless "Shane" Falcons and juggernaut Saints would have taught the NFL and NBC their lesson, but aw hell no!  We get to endure this miserable, pathetic excuse of a football game again this year!  Yo, NFL?  NBC?  NOBODY gives a sh*t about this rivalry other than the Deep South!  And last time I checked, NBC?  Your cable news network spends every free second demeaning that great section of our fine nation!

(Seriously, is it too late to flex in raiders at Chiefs into that slot?  Because if the Chiefs lose Sunday, it'll be 7-4 oakland at 7-4 Kansas City to open December in all likelihood.  (Pause).  Hang on, what's the current Sunday nighter to open December.  (stevo checking nfl.com ...)  Damn.  Pats at Texans.  That ain't getting flexed (nor should it be).  But CBS has the double header, and its' national game currently is Browns at Steelers.  Ooh!  We're so getting flexed to 3:25!  And if you don't understand why I get so geeked up for national slot / prime time games at home?  Then you've never tailgated with me.)

* My Thursday night pick was at "Super" Cardinals (-10) 31, 49ers 27.

* Jaguars (+1 1/2) 31, Texans 24 (Game in London).  The AFC South is going to be one glorious clusterf*ck, the likes of which, only our 2011 AFC West could possibly hope to match.

* at Bills 16, Redskins (+9) 10.  Call me crazy, but if someone misdiagnosed a cancerous tumor on my brain for six years, like the Redskins medical staff did with Trent Williams?  I'd demand a trade too.  I'd at least demand a better team of doctors.  Also, "ALF Game O' The Week" honors.

* Titans (+3 1/2) 24, at Panthers 20.  Next week in Nashville is going to be epic!  And I'm not just saying that about my likely bar tab at the, uuh, bars on Broadway!  Also, this conversation occurred last night at dinner:

(stevo) it sucks y'all aren't going.
(stevo's second mom) Yeah, it does.
(stevo) because you're always good for the bar tab.  And you know Andrew can't afford it.  So now I get to max out my Cap One for the weekend!  Damn!
(stevo's second mom) Aww.  My son is finally growing up!
(stevo) (sighing in disgust) Will you at least pick up this check?

The lesson?  I really am as cheap as my brother ... sometimes.

* at Eagles (-4 1/2) 35, Bears 13.  Frankly, I'm not sure how Chicago gets to 13.

* at Dolphins (+3) 3, Jets 0.  If Sam Darnold catches mono from the night life scene in New York, what the hell is he going to catch in South Beach?

Also, for those of you who openly mocked me for calling Mr. Darnold "Browning Nagle Junior" from the moment he was drafted, who's laughing now?  Just lose every damned game left and draft Joe Burrow or Tua, Gang Green.  (Pause).  What?  (Pause).  Yeah, Mr. Darnold might get gangrene.  It's certainly within the realm of possibility!

Also, without question -- (allard baird voice) without question! -- your "Good Times Game O' The Week" honors.

* at Steelers (+1) 26, Colts 16.  This line is patently absurd.  It makes as much sense as I do after a twelve pack of Shiner.  (Meaning, it makes none at all.)

* at raiders (-2) 41, Lions 38 (OT).  Need a huge day out of Matthew Stafford for team tito.  Thankfully, the raiders defense should oblige.

* at Seahawks (-4 1/2) 30, Bucs 20.  I got nothing.

* Browns (-4) 45, at those people 6.  Does this picture sum those people up, or what:

One more?  Fine.  I can oblige:

One more?  ("outback" dj voice) What the f*ck.  It's just a buck!

Also -- "Empty Nest Game O' The Week" honors.

* Packers (-3 1/2) 41, at "Super" Chargers 30.  Let's play The Pyramid, shall we?

(markie post voice) Trent Dilfer.  Brad Johnson.  joe flacco.
(stevo voice) Mediocre quarterbacks!
(markie post voice) Uuh ... Jake Delhomme.  Neil O'Donnell.
(stevo voice) Sh*tty quarterbacks!
(markie post voice) No.  Well yes, but ... uuh ... Mark Rypien.  Colin Kaepernick.  Matt Hasselbeck.
(stevo voice) Underrated quarterbacks!
(markie post voice) Uuh ... Jeff Hostetler.  Stan Humphries.  Rex Grossman!
(stevo voice) Quarterbacks who've started a Super Bowl!
(markie post voice) Yes!  Yes!  Yes!
(hugs all around as the confetti falls).

You know who'll never appear as a possible answer to "QBs Who Have Started a Super Bowl" on The Pyramid?  Phyllis Rivers, that's who.  And you can bet Markie Post's game show career on that, jack.

(Sadly, every person under 35 is probably not only asking who Markie Post is ... but what a game show is.  (Pause).  We're coming back to this farther down this guaranteed to be "longer than Pete King's FMIA column in wordage" post.)

* at Ravens (+3) 24, Patriots 10.  This is gonna be one fun Sunday nighter.  I can't wait to see what Lamar Jackson has for the Patriots defense ... and vice versa.  Also, the Ravens defensive coordinator is named Wink Martindale.  Again -- we're coming back to this farther down, because who doesn't love Wink Martindale?  (Other than dumb f*ck "woke" millenials who have no idea what a game show is.)

* Cowboys 24, at Giants (+7 1/2) 21.  This line is a solid five points too high.  Smells like a field goal finish from here.

The "Klassy" Kevin Kietzman Tweet O' The Week.

Is he really referencing his fans wanting him back, or his intern?  (scott hall voice) Hey yo!  *

Seriously, has it really been almost twenty years since "Uno sin Pantalones" was atrapado with his, uuh, pantalones around his tobillos?  (For those of you who, like me, slept through your Spanish classes twenty five years ago, "atrapado" means "caught".  "Tobillos" means "ankles".  You can probably figure out what "pantalones" are without the ayuda de Esteban.)

Although, to be fair and honest (one of which I am rarely accused of being), to be fair and honest?  I haven't listened to a moment of 810 WHB programming since they sh*t kanned their Konfident and Klassy Kaptain pushing four months ago now.  Who knew that hate-listening was really a thing?

Still, I gotta somewhat admit with Krazy Korrupt Kietz on this one.  We need him back on the airwaves.  2pm on Kansas Kity radio just isn't the same without his klever and krafty kommentary.

That ... and please God, spare that pooch.  He deserves better than to be a kaptive of "K"KK.

--------------------

(*: is he sober in ANY of those "Hey Yo!" clips?  I'm going with "Hey No!" for 800, Alex (rimshot!)  Oh come on!  That was at least somewhat funny!)

The Watching Party Plans.

There are no The Watching Party Plans, as this is a Chiefs game I will be in attendance for.

The Tailgating Plans.

Not much to report this week.  We're doing hamburgers and dogs, assorted side dishes, and a healthy supply of beer.  All of us core members from all three of our groups that tailgate together, have plans on Saturday night (shockingly, not with each other), so we're keeping this as simple as possible.

As always, anyone and everyone who wishes to join us in the grassy knoll north of G30 is welcome to join in.  Chance, Colt, Blake and I will be in our spot by 6ish to save our, uuh, spot.  I know the Chiefs say the gates will open at 7am.  Yeah, that's (seventh day adventist voice) fertilizer.  They were supposed to open at 2:30pm last week.  They were wide, wide open at 1:15pm.

Hope to see you.  As always, first beer out of the cooler's on me!  (Quite possibly literally, from spilling it, if it's early enough.)

The Flashback.

Like with last week, there's some interesting games to pick from:

* Super Bowl IV.  Chiefs 23, Vikings 7, in this franchise's high water mark.  (stevo bashing his head against his desk, realizing his team's best moment came seven years before he was "the Spring Break "questionable decision" gone horribly wrong".)

* Week Sixteen Seventeen 1993.  Chiefs 10, Vikings 30 ... but even in defeat, the Chiefs clinched their first division championship in twenty three years.

* Week Fourteen 1999.  Chiefs 31, Vikings 28.  The last great game of Derrick Thomas' Hall of Fame career.

But the one I chose to go with ...

* Week One 1990.

Forgotten about this one?  That makes sense; it was thirty years ago ... but it was more than just a season opener, more than just a home opener, in hindsight.  (And, arguably, at the time, as well.)

Both teams entered off of relatively successful 1989 seasons.  The Vikings won the NFC Norris, made the Divisional Round, and were heavy favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl that year.  The Chiefs were coming off just their second winning season in twenty years, and entering Year Two of Carl and Marty's franchise-saving rebuild.

For fifty minutes, those of us who love old-school football of pound the rock and play solid defense, with an occasional forward pass (pick me!  Pick me!)?  This was your game!  1989 NFL rushing champion Christian "Swanson ** Hungry Man *** " Okoye against former Heisman winner and prolific back Herschel Walker.  Trust me -- thirteen year old me was drooling in delirium.  (That is a word, right?  Delirium?  It didn't highlight with that orange squiggly line thingy to intimate it isn't, so I guess it is!)

And yet, with barely five minutes to play, the Vikings led 21-17, and all five touchdowns had been scored through the air.

But with those five minutes and change to play, the Chiefs marched into Vikings territory, and faced first and goal.  Then second and goal.  Then third and goal.  And ultimately, fourth and goal at the Vikings two.

Handoff.  Okoye.  Touchdown.  Chiefs 24, Vikings 21, which wound up being your final score.

And yet, simply saying "Chiefs win", or "final score", just doesn't do this game justice.

For the first time in a damned long time -- for the first time in my life -- the Chiefs had proven they could face anyone, go toe to toe, glove to glove, punch to punch with them -- and win.  For the first time in twenty years, they were a credible threat to the rest of the league.

As meaningful as October 7, 1991 remains in Chiefs history?  (And save for Super Bowl IV, it's the most meaningful game of any of our lifetime's, save for possibly last year's AFC Title Game?)  That magical night doesn't happen, at least as it did, if Christian Okoye doesn't plow through the Purple People Eater's II Defense, if Marty doesn't have the balls to go for it, rather than kick the field goal, with the game -- and possibly the defining moment of his young coaching career in Kansas City -- on the line.

The first gigantic foundational block into what the Chiefs would become, was laid that day in the east end zone.  And damn, it was fun to watch it happen.

(Pause).  Yeah, one other thing ...

That 1990 Chiefs season isn't talked about nearly enough, as one of the wackiest seasons ever.  Not only did you have the Chiefs springing a monumental, franchise-forming upset over one of the best teams in the sport to open the season, you had ...

* the very next week, Mr. Okoye was virtually decapitated by that asshole steve atwater on 4th and 1 to help seal a 24-23 those people victory. ****

* Week Six saw the Chiefs beat the Lions 43-24 in Barry Sanders' only career game at Arrowhead.  More incredible than that "wait, we only saw him once in person?" (rob dyrdek voice) ridiculousness, despite the presence of the two leading rushers in the NFL from 1989?  It was unknown Chiefs player Barry Word who posted the 200 yard effort that day.

* Week Nine saw the Chiefs beat the raiders 9-7 in what can only be described as the most miserable weather day I've ever sat through a game for.  It sleeted the entire day.  The field was a solid sheet of ice, which probably accounts for the Chiefs blocking two punts, one of which occurred when the raiders punter simply lifted his foot and landed on his ass.

* And then, of course, Week Ten.  As our long-gone ol' pardner, Mr. William Grigsby, so famously noted about this one: "I'm too old to cry, and I'm too sick to puke".  This was the game when Derrick Thomas recorded seven sacks, had Dave Kreig in his grasp for an eighth, only Mr. Kreig escaped, heaved it to the end zone, and Paul Skanzi caught the forty plus yard Hail Mary to beat the Chiefs 17-16.

* Week Fourteen.  Of every proud, damned proud, and really g*ddmaned proud moment I have felt as a Chiefs fan, few if any make me feel really g*ddmaned prouder than Week Fourteen 1990, even to this day.  Because Week Fourteen -- a 31-20 Chiefs victory -- is the game when antichrist couldn't hear, Arrowhead was so loud.  Let that sink in.  It was so damned loud inside the stadium -- continuously! -- that the opposition couldn't hear the play call, to set up a silent count.  That's damned awesome.

Of course, rather than suck it up like a big boy and play on, antichrist sticks his thumb in his mouth like the pathetic intemperate toddler he still is, and whines to the referees, who rather than tell him to act his age and do his job, coddle antichrist and threaten to penalize the Chiefs if us fans don't shut up and let him get a snap off.

You can imagine how Chiefs fans reacted to that request.  (Note: it only got louder.) *****

And of course, because Chiefs gonna Chief, you follow that monumental moment up with ...

* Week Fifteen.  I will never, until the day I die, forget the homemade sign on the lower wall of the west end zone that frigid December day.  It was a drawing of Warren Moon on a sheet, in an Oilers uniform, with his pants down and a gun pointed at his bare ass, saying "Shoot the Moon!"

Shoot away young Warren did, to the tune of 6,598,387 yards (note: approximate figure; actual total may have been higher) against the helpless quadfecta of Jeff Donaldson, Stan Petry, Jayice Pearson, and "F*ck" Chuck Mincy. ******

(Note: I also loved that before the renovations a decade ago, when Arrowhead still had the overhead sign with a picture of a big moment in franchise history directing you to each section?  Section 132's "picture of a big moment" was Haywood Jeffries taking off on a 80 plus yard touchdown, as "F*ck" Chuck and Jayice Pearson are laying prostate on the ground, already toast with sixty yards of field to go.  Nothing says spending multiple decades sitting in Section 132, like a couple worthless defenders laying in a drunken stupor position as the game passes them by.  Am I right or am I right?)

And of course ... the piece de resistance ...

* Wild Card Game.  The Chiefs lead 13-0 virtually all day.  They're up 16-3 with two minutes to play.  Then Marino gonna Marino, Chiefs gonna Chief, and suddenly, down 16-17 with ten seconds left, Nick Lowery trots out to try a 42 yard field goal for the win.  It's good!  Oh, but wait.  Holding, 77 Offense.  The retry from 52?  (phil hartman in "super colon blow" commercial) Not even close.

Whatever one may think of the 1990 season, from start to finish?  We sure as sh*t got our money's worth.

--------------------

(**: not this Swanson (probably) Hungry Man.  But he's well worth your reading time, both on Twitter and at Arrowhead Pride.)

(***: my first fantasy football team ever (1996!) was called the Swanson Hungry Men in Mr. Okoye's honor.  (Pause).  Damned right I'm thinking about "changing my franchise name" back to it, given my 3-5-0 start this year, with two losses by decimals of points.)

(****: Jesus, I miss Dierdorf openly rooting in the booth for the Chiefs.  I really, really, really miss his biased, bigoted commentary in the Red and Gold's favor.)

(*****: the Chiefs gave away yellow hats that day?  I don't remember that.  And as anyone who reads this site on a regular basis knows, I have an encyclopeic knowledge of most things Chiefs.  Also, I still have the towel giveaway from my 21st birthday, when those people beat us here in the Divisional Round 10-14.  Yes, I still have a freaking towel from twenty two years ago.)

(******: there are very few Chiefs players ******* I have ever hated more than "F*ck" Chuck Mincy.  That order from that post ten years ago, pretty much still stands.)

(*******: emphasis on Chiefs player.  There is one professional former Kansas City athlete I hate more.  Or, as I noted to his face twenty something years ago now: "you're the son of a b*tch we traded David Cone for".  The lesson?  As always, you may have had some fun with friends growing up, but you'll really struggle to top the fun myself, Mr. Reason, Jasson, bts, Cocoa Vineet, "Tony Gonzalez", and other assorted characters had growing up.  Especially in those magical four years called "college".)

Stevo's Drink O' The Week.

Fourteen Hands was on sale at Harry's this week.  So I grabbed a case, mixing and matching a few of them ... and damn, I'd forgotten how good their merlot is.  I plowed through all three bottles in barely an evening and a half, and I usually buy red wine because I tend to plow through it slower than I do white.  I couldn't stop refilling my glass, especially Thursday night, as the chocolate bowl was sitting there, begging to be attacked.  (More on this in the next section below.)

This week's Drink O' The Week -- Fourteen Hands merlot.  You can't go wrong with any Fourteen Hands, to be honest, but the merlot is the best.

Especially with a couple Milky Way's.

--------------------

Stevo Neighborhood Update.

So, I thought I'd do my neighborly duty Thursday night, and bought a couple bags of candy, turned the lights of the Casa de Stevo on, flung that front door wide open, and waited for the two or four trick-or-treaters we get every year.

And trust me, we never get more than four or five of them.  I've lived in Waldo for pushing five years now, and the best part about it is that virtually no kids live there.  No, really -- 95% of us who live there are either (a) millenials just starting out, (b) single (7-11 super big gulp voice) middle aged people like me, or (c) retirees who built the damned house they live in sixty years ago.

I mean, when the nephew and/or nieces come over, it like doubles the population of the under eighteen crowd in my part of town.  And as Joe Biden would note: "that's the God's honest truth, folks!"  (Pause).  Damn, I'm gonna miss Joey when he drops out after getting his ass handed to him in California to open March.

(Also, spare me the "you're biased for Biden!" responses.  I support Mayor Pete, both vocally and financially, and I enthusiastically am waiting to elect him in 367 days.  But I am fine with Biden if he's the nominee.  Because I just don't think I can bring myself to vote for that man currently in the Oval Office.  I couldn't do it three years ago; I don't think I can do it now.  He's just too undignified for the job.  Although if "House of Wings" actually does pin a medal on that dog, I could be swayed ...)

(Also, I defy you to find anyone else, who went on the record and said Trump would win, on November 8, 2016, as I did in the linked post above.  I may suck at gambling on football picks, but I can nail political prognosticating, dammit.)

Anyway, from about 6:30 until pushing 8, I think there were maybe three trick or treaters.  I actually implored the couple who did show up to "please, take as much as you want", as I figured there was no way that Tupperware bowl was getting drained, and the last thing I need is to plow through a case of Twix and Snickers bars while enjoying said Fourteen Hands merlot.

Then came 8pm.  I first noticed the commotion on the street as a couple cars pulled up, and parked across the street (in front of the house with the cat named Stevo ... who still can't be corralled in when he's let out.  It's really starting to p*ss me off.  I set the alarm for 7am for a reason, and that's to sleep in until 7am, (gumby voice) dammit.)

Anyway, about two seconds later, the doorbell is getting pounded.  Like a good dude, I pause the "Survivor" from Wednesday night *, put the glass of merlot down, head over to the door, grab the candy bowl ...

... and there, on the porch, are about twenty trick or treaters, half of which hadn't even bothered to wear a costume ** .  None of these "kids" -- most of which were teenagers -- were from the neighborhood.  Well, at least my neighborhood.

Anyways, they cleaned out the candy bowl, and I have to admit, that whoever planned this "invasion" of Madison Avenue, was a freaking genius.  You live in an economically disadvantaged part of town?  Load up the neighborhood kids, truck them to a better off area, and let them clean house!  Even my neighbor John, as we were standing there in our mutual driveway watching this pack of candy-hungry strangers roam free and fleece house after house, even he was impressed at how brazen and bold these kids (and their parents and/or older friend who drove them to my 'hood) were.

Sometimes, you just have to admire people with no shame.  Thursday?  Was one of those nights.

--------------------

(*: this has been the best season of "Survivor" in ten seasons, easily.  I freaking love Elaine.  And Aaron flat out lying -- even after the votes were cast! -- to Tommy is amongst my favorite moments of this show, and we're in season what, thirty nine, forty?  Jesus, this week's "what the hell just happened here?!?!?!" tribal council was so freaking good.  Keep this up, "Survivor".  Please keep this up!)

(**: raise your hand if you've ever had former FOX 4 meterologist Mike Thompson tell you to your face that "you're the sorriest bunch of trick or treaters I've ever seen"!  I'm not sure what stuns me more about that: that it actually happened ... or that none of us were stoned, drunk, or both, when it occurred.  (Pause).  What?  (Pause).  Yeah, good point -- Mark was probably stoned.  But everyone else was, uuh, stone sober.)

"Disreputable Mexican Food Truck" Update.

Skipping it this week for something more important.

--------------------

The Fine Fifteen.

With the sad news that legendary game show host Alex Trebec is in the fight of his life against cancer, it only makes sense to figure out, who is the greatest game show host of all time?  (At least according to this guy.)

While I am fully aware that not all of you share my addiction to GSN ... here's my rankings, in reverse order.

Honorable Mention: Bill Cullen.  To his credit, he looked drunk in every show he hosted.  (To his credit, he probably was eight sheets to the wind in every show he hosted.)

15. Peter Tomarken.  Either he's five spots too low (rimshot!), or five spots too high.  No matter your preference?  "Press Your Luck" is one of the five best game shows ever.  That's undebatable.

14. Ray Combs.  Not much cup o' tea.  But when you're following one of the greatest hosts of all time, you probably aren't anyone's cup o' tea.

13. Bert Convy.  Sadly, gone way too soon.  I actually like "Super Password" more than I like the original.  And "Win, Lose, or Draw" is still spectacular.  You can't beat Burt Reynolds trying to figure out what the hell Dom Deluise is drawing, when it comes to pure comedy.

12. Pat Sajak.  He's the best game show host on Twitter.  Although dammit folks, how awesome would the legends yet to appear have been on Twitter back in the day?  I'm looking at you, Gene.  You too, Chuck and Brett.  Oh, wait, they were just panelists.  But definitely you, Gene.

11. Richard Dawson.  Seriously, watch a Dick Dawson hosted "Family Feud" sometime, especially from the early years (late 70s/early 80s).  My God.  If these woke leftists could see the sh*t Dick Dawson did to his female contestants?  I cringe to think how triggered they'd be.

10. Monty Hall.  Was never a "Let's Make a Deal" fan.  I'm still not.

9. Steve Harvey.  I'm going to say something that might trigger non-woke right wingers.  Ready?  Get your support and/or therapy animals ready, because here it comes.  Steve Harvey's "Family Feud" is far, far superior to Dick Dawson's, or Ray Combs', or anyone else's, "Family Feud".  And if you truly think about it, you know I'm right.

(Note: from this point on, these are the eight greatest game show hosts, and other than Steve Harvey, nobody else is ever joining this club.  This is the Pantheon of Game Show Hosts.)

8. Alex Trebec.  Making us semi-intelligent people feel dumb f*ck retarded for thirty plus years and counting.  Get well soon dude.

7. Allen Ludden.  I ask this with all seriousness: can you imagine the foreplay that had to be going on in the Ludden / Betty White bedroom back in the day?  Just thinking about the possibilities makes me laugh out loud.  I mean, did they have a "Password" type board, where they'd reveal clue by clue what act of frisky fornication would be going down tonight?  These are the things that humor me folks.  And yes -- if you don't get help at Charter, please: get help somewhere.

6. Bob Barker.  Speaking of triggering woke millenials and their support animals, Bob Barker's Beauties everyone!  You know Ol' Bob is still furious there's one male model now, let alone two.  Plus, Ol' Bob did get sued -- multiple times! -- for sexual harassment and discrimination.  Something Number One (yet to appear) and Dick Dawson never faced ... but definitely should have.

5. Dick Clark.  Look it, my love for this man (affectionately known on this site as "Strokey") is unconditional.  I cannot tell you how much I love (Insert Dollar Amount Here) Pyramid.  I can't even begin to guess how many New Year's Eve's I've rang in as only I can: me, on a couch by myself, a couple bottles of champagne on the coffee table, watching "Strokey" Dick Clark count that ball down.  I know that tradition started in high school, and continued well into my thirties.  Hell, I'd still be doing that today if "Strokey" was still with us.  Just a marvel of a man, a genius of a host, and anyone who makes Markie Post relevant on the national scene, has my respect.

(Note: ten, eleven year old Stevo had a sick crush on Ms. Post.  And I mean sick.  As in "probably good stalking laws weren't in place thirty years ago" crush.  Let's move on before I begin to reflect on how sad and pathetic ten, eleven year old Stevo was ...)

4. Hang on.  I just realized -- as only I can -- that I have six dudes left for four spots.  So either I have to start over, boot Bill Cullen, and tell Pete Tomarken his luck has been pressed ... or:

4a. Regis Philbin.  If you didn't watch "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" twenty years ago when it first came onto the scene, either (a) you weren't alive, or (b) you're lying.

4b. Jeff Probst.  True story: my Second Parents' former neighbors, Joyce and Jerry, their daughter was married on Mr. Probst's short lived talk show, in a special episode giving people with disasterous wedding days a second chance to make it right.  (Amanda and David, theirs was (stewie griffin voice) roo-eened by a hurricane.)  Also, like with 4a, if you didn't watch "Survivor" twenty years ago when it first came on the scene?  Either (a) you weren't alive, or (b) you're lying.

4c. Wink Martindale.  When you see who number three is, many of you will be screaming that I've got Ol' Wink at least a spot too low.  And you may have a point.  But come on.  "High Rollers".  "Tic Tac Dough".  The man single handedly propped up USA's afternoon programming for most of the 1980s folks!  Wait, I'm not helping my point in putting him this low, am I?  Dammit.

3. Chuck "Two and Two" Woolery.  "Love Connection" gave rise to such low-quality, abject crass projects like "Temptation Island", "Paradise Hotel", and "Love Island".  You gotta respect that.  Also, you gotta love "two and two".  You got to.

2. Bob Eubanks.  I'm telling you, picking between the top two is like picking between Mia Khalifa or Charlie in their prime to spend the night with.  You just can't go wrong *** .  As great as "The Newlywed Game" was, without question -- (allard baird voice) without question! -- Bob's career highlight had to be his appearances in Michael Moore's masterpiece "Roger and Me".  If only for two jokes that even thirty years ago, were so outrageous you couldn't help but be offended, only one of which I'll actually quote:

"So the other day, I was mowing the yard with my shirt off, and my back got stiff.  So my wife told me next time, to mow (it) with my pants off!"

(The other joke involved Jews and AIDS.  I'm not going there.)

But speaking of stiff, phallic like things ... there's only one number one, and we all know who it blanking is:

1. Gene Rayburn.  True story: I'd been working at Transamerica for maybe two, three months right out of college.  And being in accounting and reinsurance, I handled the recovery of some of our large dollar claims **** .  And there it was one sad, cold February morning: a death certificate for the one, the only, Gene Rayburn ***** .

I literally cried.

That might have been my finest hour at that company, come to think of it.

--------------------

(***: do you realize it'll be twenty years come January, since "The Night That Will Live in Infamy" went down?  Me, a stripper, a cripple, and a chick with a mustache.  Twenty years.  And I'm still as morally bankrupt now, as I was then.  Also, my God, was Charlie hot as hell.)

(****: my favorite death claim ever, and my buddy Hadley still has a copy of the death certificate, listed the cause of death as "executed by the state of Maryland".  I guess some companies really will insure anyone.)

(*****: my favorite part of, uuh, "Private Parts", the Howard Stern biographical movie, is when Howard, Jackie, and Robin are sitting around the studio of W NNNNNNNNNN B C, playing "Match Game", with Howard as Gene Rayburn, Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling as himself, and the lovely Robin Quivers as Brett Somers.  It is freaking fantastic.)

The Chiefs Pontification and Prognostication.

Picking the Chiefs This Season:

SU: 4-4-0 (L Jaguars, W raiders, W Ravens, W Lions, L Colts, L Texans, W those people, L Packers).
ATS: 4-4-0 (L Jaguars, W raiders, W Ravens, L Lions, L Colts, W Texans, W those people, L Packers).

There were two other games I could have chosen for The Flashback: Week Three 2007 and Week Four 2011.

Both of those games saved seasons that had damned near spiraled out of control.  The 2007 Chiefs were 0-2 entering that game.  The 2011 Chiefs were 0-3 entering that season's matchup with the Vikings.

Both Chiefs teams won that matchup.  The 2007 Chiefs would springboard that win into winning four of five to look frisky at midseason.  The 2011 Chiefs would win three more in a row to get to 4-3, before eventually collapsing as well.

And now, once again, the Chiefs face the Vikings in what could be the defining home game of the season.

Only ... it won't be.

I hope to see everyone reading this tomorrow.  I hope you show up, lose your voice from screaming so loud, and have to call in "sick" from drinking too many cold ones out of my cooler.

I believe with 100% certainty that if the Chiefs win this game, they will win the division.  I still think they will win the division even with a loss, although I'd lower my certainty to about 75% with a defeat.

We have one game that is a "margin for error".  This is it.

I hope we don't whiz it away.

* at Chiefs (NL) 24, Vikings 14.  (I'll count the No Line as a Pick 'Em.)

I believe this season is going to look a whole lot different, and a whole lot better, come midnight Sunday night.  Come out and join us in making that difference happen!

week eight: a return to the truth ...

"We hold our lighters up
If it's a good song --
A little Lynyrd Skynyrd?
Got you singing along!

Pour some gasoline
On a pile of wood --
Just a little too much?
Will make it burn real good!

We got the moonshine --
I'm talking both kinds.
Have you seen my baby?
Starin' at those tan lines!

Yeah we're throwing down,
Until the cops come.
But when the blue lights flash?
Boys, it's time to run!

You know the lights of my hometown?
They come alive when the sun goes down!
Talkin' 'bout the lights of my hometown --
Yeah, they come alive when the sun goes down! ..."

-- "Lights Of My Hometown" by Brantley Gilbert.

OK, got a few weeks of stats to update, so here we go ...

Stats Through Week Seven.

* Week Six SU: 5-9-0.
* Week Seven SU: 9-5-0.
* SU Totals Through Week Seven: 59-46-1.

* Week Six ATS: 6-8-0.
* Week Seven ATS: 9-5-0.
* ATS Totals Through Week Seven: 58-47-1.

* Week Six Upset / Week: L Browns SU (28-32 Seahawks) / L ATS (+1).
* Week Seven Upset / Week: L Redskins SU (0-9 49ers) / W ATS (+10).
* Upset / Week Straight Up Through Week Seven: 5-3-0.
* Upset / Week Against the Spread Through Week Seven: 6-2-0.

Picking the Chiefs:

* Straight Up: 4-3-0 (L Jaguars, W raiders, W Ravens, W Lions, L Colts, L Texans, W those people).
* Against the Spread: 4-3-0 (L Jaguars, W raiders, W Ravens, L Lions, L Colts, W Texans, W those people).

And with those out of the way, let's get on to the non-Chiefs Week Eig ... (pause).  What?  (Pause).  Really?  A random, out of nowhere email as I'm typing this?  Imagine the odds of that happening!  OK, Stevo's Site Numero Dos' Non-Existent Editor Dudette, send it through.

"You didn't pick an Upset of the Week for this week!  What the hell?  My kids need to eat, dammit!  I count on betting against you!" -- "bts", Incorporated Johnson County.

This week's Upset of the Week can be summed up in five words it has been a long, long time, since I got to type, let alone say.

(stevo exhaling a deep, deep sigh of disgust).

And those five words?

Will appear somewhere down below.

--------------------

The Non-Chiefs Picks.

* Byes: Cowboys, Ravens.  Rest up, Ravens.  Every Chiefs fan and his half-drunk brother will be rooting like hell for you next Sunday night.  Please -- show up and do your job!  (The Patriots visit the Ravens next Sunday night, (brett young voice) in case you didn't know.)

* at Vikings 24, Redskins (+16) 10.  I'm not comfortable wagering on Kirk Cousins in prime time.  I'm definitely not comfortable laying sixteen on Kirk Cousins, irregardless of the opponent.  So I'll split the baby.  Also, "Empty Nest Game O' The Week" Honors.

* at Lions 31, Giants (+6 1/2) 28.  At least Matt Stafford has finally turned into the fantasy football scoring machine I always knew he could become.

* at Titans (-2 1/2) 27, Bucs 17.  How awesome was that finish last week?  I mean, even Mike Tirico noted on "Sunday Night Countdown" (or whatever the hell NBC calls its' pregame show) that "only the Chargers, or possibly the Jets, could have lost that game!"  Well yes.  We get it Mike.  But to be fair, only the Chargers would have been in position to lose that game.  The Jets don't have a godd*mned clue what the word "position" means, let alone where the goal line is.

* "Super" Chargers (+4) 35, at Bears 14.  I had to do a quadruple take looking at this line on CBS Sportsline's spot.  And by "quadruple take", I literally had to check that I wasn't a twelve pack in, hadn't hit a bowl, hadn't smoked a pre-rolled, hadn't tapped my new supply of Energy or Sleep pills from the good folks at The Green Solution * , and had to confirm that like Sam Darnold, I wasn't dodging ghosts in my "house".  And I STILL didn't believe this line.  I mean, and I defer to people far, far smarter than me when it comes to wagering ... what am I missing?

(*: thanks Tyler!  Knew I could count on you with my "investment" when I couldn't make it last week!  January 1st cannot get here soon enough!)

* Seahawks (-3 1/2) 41, at "Shane" Falcons 20.  Of every preseason pick I made, picking the "Shane" Falcons to be the one seed out of the NFC has to be the worst.  Also, Dan Quinn is so getting fired after this game -- Atlanta has too much talent to be 1-7 entering its' bye.  I mean, good God, even John Bell Hood held out for a solid six weeks against General Sherman, despite having no hope of victory.  This "defense of Atlanta" offers less of a, uuh, defense, than Mr. Hood's Confederate troops did, on Sherman's March to the Sea(hawks).  (rimshot!)  Oh come on, that was somewhat funny!  Also, "ALF Game O' The Week" Honors.

* Eagles (+1 1/2) 31, at Bills 20.  Legendary ESPN anchor Chris Berman claims "nobody circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills".  And he does have a fair point to be made with that statement.  But this is quite possibly the Eagles season on the line.  They're 3-4-0, L2, and essentially two back of Dallas (via tiebreakers) ... and after this one, the schedule looks like this: vs Bears / bye / vs Patriots (CBS) / vs Seahawks (SNF).  In the words of Stevo's Site Numero Dos' Official Color Commentator (Emeritus) Dan Dierdorf: it would "behoove" the Eagles to win this game.  They will.

* Rams 16, vs Bengals (+13) 13 (Game in London).  London games are often wacky, "what the f*ck just happened here?!?!?!" affairs.  Let the tradition continue.  Also, "Good Times Game O' The Week" Honors.

* "Super" Cardinals (+10) 31, at Saints 20.  Teddy Bridgewater cannot possibly go 6-0 filling in for Drew Brees, can he?  (Note: he won't; Drew Brees is starting.)  Saints have their bye after this one, before facing four straight divisional games.  They can afford a slight slip-up, if (like me) you think the 49ers are paper tigers.

* at Colts (-6) 31, those people 21.  I got nothing but laughter:

* at Jaguars (-6) 27, Jets 20.  I'll go there -- was it the ghost of Jimmy Hoffa that Sam Darnold was seeing on Monday night?  I mean, granted, it's the Fake Meadowlands, but Mr. Hoffa could have been buried underneath a parking lot there 40 years ago, versus under the end zone.

* at 49ers (-5 1/2) 34, Panthers 24.  Every man and his brother is loading up on the Panthers.  Make this the Wayne Allyn Root "Contrarian Pick O' The Week".  49ers get to 7-0 for the first time since 1990.  And yeah, I love the fact that the Chiefs have started better than that, twice, since the last time the 49ers did it.

* at Texans 45, raiders (+6 1/2) 41.  I pray this is our CBS local game.  (Note: it is!)  If it is, it'll be pulled up during the tailgate.  If it's not?  I might splurge, pay the $29 to buy the game, and roll it off the iPad during tailgating.  To think this was a (not even remotely) competitive playoff game three years ago seeing "Brave" Brock Osweiler vs connor cook!

* at Patriots 34, Browns (+12 1/2) 31 (OT).  The Browns can win this game outright.  I hope they do.  But if they lose, it's not paradise lost.  They could seriously run the table after this one.  I wouldn't wager on it ... but it's possible.  Their last 9 after this one: at those people / vs Bills / vs Steelers (TNF) / vs Dolphins / at Steelers / vs Bengals / at "Super" Cardinals / vs Ravens / at Bengals.  Tell me Baker can't go 8-1 against that stretch of stench to get to 10-6 (assuming a loss today to fall to 2-5).  Or, as my co-worker and buddy Pickell would say: "put it this way" -- "Sir" Alex Smith navigated a far more difficult road, to close 10-0 four years ago, technically 11-0 if you count the playoff win, than Baker faces in his next ten, beginning Sunday.

* at Steelers 3, Dolphins (+14 1/2) 0.  If I ran "Monday Night Football", I'd sue the NFL over being forced to broadcast this game.  This is a disgrace of a prime-time game.  What a f*cking joke.

--------------------

The "Klassy" Kevin Kietzman Tweet O' The Week.

I'm not sure what the stages of grief and/or denial are, but we've definitely entered the "bitter as f*ck" phase, for El Kapitan de Klassy:

OK, first of all, if you don't know who the Khiefs backup quarterback is, how the hell did you hold down the drive-time slot on local sports radio for two dekades?  "I don't know my QB."  I mean, if he'd tweeted "I don't know my BAC", that's understandable, because most people don't walk around with a breathalyzer in their pocket, unless forced to by a kourt of law.  (Note: not even I've ever been forced to do that ... so you've really gotta have problems with the sauce, to have that happen.)  If he'd tweeted "I can't find my belt", again, understandable, given Kheater Kev's past.

But to not know who Matt Moore is?  (nell carter ... excuse me -- nell karter -- voice) Gimme a break!

Secondly, how can you go from full on panic mode, and in your very next tweet declare the game an "easy win"?  Which one is it, Ol' Kev?

Also, the United States has approximately 360 million kitizens.  When you figure between NYC (excuse me, NYK), LA, and Houston, you've got at least 60 million that live on the water, and we haven't even gotten into Miami, San Fran, Seattle, Portland, or the Jersey seaboard, let alone Salt Lake City, Chicago, or Milwaukee ... so where the hell are you coming up with "300 million Americans that don't live on the water"?

And lastly, if it was an "easy win", why are you focusing on what went wrong?  (Which, to be fair, aside from Mr. Mahomes' injury, the answer to "what went wrong" is (sunny ledford voice) not a god d*mned thing.)

Although I did love the shout-out to Karma.  As "The Voice of Reason"'s sister can tell you -- she is a b*tch.

In all seriousness, this guy is starting to make me look sane and reasonable.  And it's my lack of sanity and reason that explains why I have a freaking "Voice of Reason" to begin with!

Please, "K"KK -- if you don't get help at Kharter, please -- get help somewhere.

The Watching Party Plans.

There are no The Watching Party Plans, as this is a Chiefs game I will be in attendance for.

--------------------

The Tailgating Plans.

My cousins would be proud.

(My favorite cousin and her husband (and awesome newborn) live in Milwaukee.  I'm long overdue for a BuKCsketball weekend, come to think of it ...)

We're doing brats, kilbasas, dogs, and other heart-attack inducing sausages.  We're doing beer mac and cheese (note: I have no idea what this is, but I'm good for two bowls), hot German potato salad or soup (I forget which one I was told), plus a full on Bloody Mary bar featuring Grey Goose vodka (thanks Mr. Griffin!) and the bloody mary mix we picked up at Waddy's in South Dakota last month.

The Bus is leaving at 11:30.  We should be in line by noon.  I know the STM email said the gates open at 2:30, but come on.  It's going to be in the low 60s, no wind, all sun, and it's the two most alcoholic-infused fanbases in the nation coming together.  Those bastardos are opening by 1:30 at the latest.

(And yes, I have a text in to my "highly placed confidential source who only speaks on condition of anonymity", aka "Rufus", as to his thoughts on when the gates will actually open.  He is almost never wrong.)

As always, anyone and everyone who wishes to join in the fun, tomfoolery, and hijinks is more than welcome to, uuh, join in.  We don't discriminate or exclude.  At least not as long as I'm a part of this group.  Which I'm guessing will be until I drop dead.

--------------------

The Flashback.

There are a few juicy ones to (ralph wiggum voice) choo-choo-choose from, like:

* Super Bowl I.  Really needs no explanation.

* A late season 1989 Chiefs victory at Lambeau that not only kept the Chiefs faint playoff hopes alive, but cost the Packers the NFC Norris title, locked them out of the wild card slots, and kept them out of the playoffs entirely.

* A 1993 midseason Monday Nighter at Arrowhead that was pure madness.

* A 1996 midseason battle at Arrowhead between the two teams Sports Illustrated picked to reach Super Bowl XXXI, a 27-20 Chiefs victory best known as "The Sean LaChapelle Game".  (Note: if you know who Sean LaChapelle is, then you, like me, need mental professional help from watching too many Chiefs games.)

* The Comeback for the Ages, Week Six in Lambeau 2003, when the Chiefs trailed 34-17 with barely eight minutes to play, then forced overtime, forced an Ahman Green fumble to open overtime, and ended overtime via a Trent Green to Johnnie Morton touchdown bomb to escape 40-34.

* The Upset of the Ages, Week Fifteen at Arrowhead 2011, when the Chiefs -- a 12 point underdog! -- upset the 13-0 Packers 19-14, to temporarily keep their playoff hopes alive.  (Yes, kids, the 2011 Chiefs -- despite cycling through four god-awful quarterbacks, two sh*tty head coaches, and a general manager who prioritized tossing candy wrappers in the trash over quality draft picks, somehow, someway, controlled its own destiny entering Week Fifteen.  At 5-8.  They sadly -- and predictably -- sh*t the bed at home the following week, to blow the dream.  Your 2011 AFC Worst everyone!!!!!)

Yet none of those, is the game I choose to look back on.

Because there's one game in this (not even close to being) rivalry, that defines these two franchises -- especially over the last fifteen years -- and that game was Week Eight, 2007.

The 2007 Chiefs season did not start well.  Opening 0-2 on the road, they somehow stormed back to take 4 of 5, sitting alone in first place in the AFC West entering November, welcoming the Packers to town.

For three and a half quarters, the "wait, how the hell are the Chiefs this good?!?!?!" guys fought toe to toe, inch for inch, score for score with the team that would wind up hosting the NFC Title Game.  Trailing 16-14 with barely five minutes to play, Chiefs perpetual backup Damon Huard hit Tony Gonzalez on a gorgeous pass to put the Chiefs up 20-16.  After not one, not two, but three two-point conversion tries thanks to two defensive penalties, the Chiefs took the lead 22-16.

Even better, on the ensuing drive, the Packers faced a 2nd and 10 at their own 40.  One stand -- just one stop -- and the Chiefs would get the ball back, up six, only needing a first down to seal the most improbable win of the first half of 2007, and set up one potentially "holy hell, where did this season come from?!?!?!" stretch run, the likes of which we hadn't seen since 1995.

Instead, one play -- one f*cking play -- changed everything, in hindsight, for both franchises, for the better part of a decade.

Because Brett Favre hit an uncovered Greg Jennings for 60 yards, to put the Packers up 23-22.

Two Chiefs turnovers -- and a field goal and touchdown by the Packers -- later, the Pack won 33-22.  As noted, they'd go on to host the NFC Title Game, would reach the playoffs in 8 of the next 9 seasons, and win the Lombardi in 2010.

The Chiefs?  This would be the first of twelve consecutive losses, the first of three straight (at least) twelve loss seasons, and they would reach the playoffs only once in the next six years -- the fluke that was 2010.

Sometimes, one play doesn't just define a season, it defines a franchise for years to come.  I still have nightmares seeing Greg Jennings sprinting up the home team sideline, uncovered, and it's been twelve years now come next week.

--------------------

Stevo's Drink O' The Week.

When in doubt, go back to the classics.  And there are few, if any, drinks in life more classic than the greatest one Arrowhead has ever offered: the Jacked Up.

In case you've never had one, a Jacked Up is a lovely libation that is 1/3rd Southern Comfort, 1/3rd Jack Daniels, and 1/3rd Coke.  (And when able, chuck a lime or two in there, now that SoCo Lime isn't available anymore.)

You may not remember much after three or four of these bastardos ... but you won't regret it (maureen mcgovern voice) the morning after.

--------------------

Stevo Neighborhood Update:

It's been an, uuh, eventful couple weeks here on Madison Avenue.

First, my next door neighbor John, who is currently battling cancer, had to be admitted to the hospital, which sucks.  If you ever met this guy, you'd love him like I do.  He begins his day sitting on his front porch drinking coffee, and nine hours later when you get home from work, here's there drinking beer, somehow his perfectly manicured lawn without a blade of grass above three inches in it, without a leaf, twig, or acorn on it.  That's living the dream right there.  Especially the (merle haggard voice) "I think I'll just stay here and drink" part of it.

Second, the 75th Street water main rebuild is indefensibly indefensible.  I mean, how long does it take to replace four blocks of a water main?  We're at NINE WEEKS and counting!  And considering it's beginning to affect our water pressure now, I'm getting p*ssed.  I need my showers ridiculously hot for a solid fifteen minutes to wake up every morning, dammit.

But the other thing?  We have new neighbors who moved in (dolly parton voice) "two doors down", and across the street from me.  They have a cat.  (Needless to say, said cat does not like my other next door neighbor Sharon's dog.  That dog barks non-stop now.)

The cat's name?

Oh sweet Jesus, you cannot make this up.

Stevo.

And this cat, being new to his environs, is constantly wandering around loose, so its' owner keeps shouting "Stevo!  Stevo!" at like six in the morning.  Like Karen's dog sh*tting outside my window that early isn't bad enough, now I got some (probably) bat sh*t crazy cat lady shouting my name into the dead of morning.

What also doesn't help?  I swear, her voice sounds just like my mom's, so I always pop wide away awake thinking "what the hell did I do this time to get yelled at"?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again in the next section: you can have the suburbs.  I'll take the city, because it's just too damned much fun.

--------------------

Disreputable Mexican Food Truck Update.

If you happen to take the Southwest Trafficway northbound during the day (and I do on the way into "company Stevo works for"), you'll notice there's a couple of apartment complexes on the east side, just north of 39th Street but south of Valentine.  And that those apartment complexes have a couple of vacancies they are advertising for.

That, in and of itself, is not surprising.

What is surprising ... is that there is a gigantic "Blue Beetle Wildlife Control" banner across the entrance to these complexes, and said banner has a lovely photo of a raccoon, a rat, and other assorted vermin you want no part of in your living quarters.

Which begs the question: exactly who the hell are these places catering to?  I mean, I know I can only speak for myself, but if I was looking for a place to live, I sure as all hell would not be stopping in to check out a place that advertises it is now "wildlife clear".  Because if something as noticeable as a freaking raccoon lives luxuriously on your premises, how many cockroaches are hanging out in spiderweb hammocks inside the walls?  How many mice are living Jerry-style in an opening in the baseboard while a cat-like Tom tries to kill him?

(Also: how many people reading this know who Tom and Jerry are?  You millenials!  Like it's not bad enough you're drinking up every handle of Weller in this fine metropolitan community, you don't know cartoon classics either!)

To say nothing of those lovely bed bugs that'll (stewie griffin voice) roo-een your sleeping experience for as long as they draw breath?

39th and the Trafficway may not be the best part of town, but for f*ck's sake, it's not the heart of the inner city.  It's perfectly livable.  If I didn't love Waldo so much, I'd contemplate moving a few blocks away from these apartments to Hyde Park.  As noted, it's a very livable part of town.  (And much closer to work than I am now, although the commute in this time of year on Ward Parkway and the Trafficway is amazing to see ... but not so amazing to drive.)

Very livable ... except, apparently, for the "wildlife" that maintenance in these joints either cannot or will not control.  (Well that, or like this site's primary author, said maintenance and/or residents enjoy a joint or five a few times a week and ignore said "wildlife".  Either way, it's still ridiculous to have a "wildlife control" sign on your front lawn though, right?)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: y'all can have the suburbs.  I'll take the city.  It's just way too much damned fun living inside the metro, rather than around it.

The Chiefs Pontification and Prediction:

(the congregation) (shifting nervously in the pews)
(pastor stevo) (chugs a quick jacked up)
(pastor stevo) Let's begin.

--------------------

"Once you eliminate all other possibilities, that which remains is the truth" -- attributed to Sherlock Holmes.

--------------------

This week's Chiefs Pontification and Prediction ... comes to you via a long-dormant, formerly long-standing tradition.

Because I tried everything to come up with a theme this week.  (Note: the rest of this post wrote itself from about 5am Saturday through 7:30am Saturday, before I took a nap from frustration.)  I tried a "Tale O' The Tape".  I tried an inspirational speech.  I even contemplated hauling out my best Herm Edwards voice to encourage us to simply "believe a miracle" (which my fantasy team desperately needs today to avoid a 2-6 start ... with two losses by less than a point already.  Including last week's "NOOOOOOO!!!!!!" late completion to some Jets wide receiver I've never heard of for 13 yards and 0.3 point victory for my opponent.  Oof.)

(Also, the fact I've never heard of this dude, probably explains why I'm 2-5 with Le'Veon Bell in my lineup every week.  The lesson?  As always -- I'm usually drunk, high, or both, at the moments in life that truly matter, like a fantasy football draft.)

I set my alarm for 7am this morning -- GameDay morning -- in the hopes that something would come to me (debbie gibson voice) "only in my dreams" * .

(*: she hosts a "mixtape" show every other Friday at 5pm CT on SiriusXM 16 that is FANTASTIC.  If you're within five years of age of me (I'll turn 43 on Wild Card weekend), you will LOVE this show.  Next new airing is November 8th ... as I'm driving to Nashville.  #effyeah)

But in the end, after a day of starts and stops, ups and downs, frustrations and can tossing and pacing the crime-riddled paths of Sunnyside Park in an attempt to generate some intelligent topics of conversation, even a shot-fueled night at the Double asking fellow drunken baseball fans what I should write about ... well, as noted: once you eliminate all other possibilities?

That which remains is the truth.

And the truth?

Is what used to be the staple that keyed this mad exercise in gambling idiocy, twenty years ago.

Feel free to hit your print button ... and enjoy, if possibly (ok, definitely not, but still), for possibly for the last time ...

"The Poem".

"Sunday night at Arrowhead
The Chiefs will have the Packers over.
It promises to be slightly more intense?
Than a kid's game of Red Rover.

The Chiefs at five and two sit atop the West;
The Pack at six and one sit atop the Norris.
A matchup between two really good teams?
NBC Execs sing the "Hallelujah!" chorus!

The Pack feature Aaron Rodgers,
And a defense led by some Smiths;
The Chiefs are missing Patrick Mahomes --
We could use an Alex Smith.

Instead it will be Matt Moore with the start,
His first in a couple of years.
(He's likely been spending his last two years,
Saying nothing but "yes, dear".)

The Chiefs also are missing
Half of their offensive line.
But that's OK -- the defense is down so many players,
It might be impossible to play nickel, let alone dime.

On paper this game is already decided --
The Packers win in a route.
Buf for once, we hope Arnold was right,
And paper is "what we talkin' 'bout"!

Because a laminated sheet is the way
The Chiefs steal the game,
And send the Packers home,
With another loss to their name.

See the one thing the Packers cannot plan for,
The one think they cannot see,
Is just how brilliant a mind,
The Chiefs have in "Fat" Andy Reid.

He will scheme, he will plot,
He will leave no stone unturned,
In an effort to find an advantage,
Over the Packers and Matt LaFleur.

True, the Chiefs could use some help tonight,
From some unlikely sources.
So let's place a call to the ages,
Through a couple classic verses.

"But then, I stop.
Because I spot a car.
That might contain
My special little star." (c)

That star was always
Donnie Lewis Edwards Junior;
The day he was not resigned?
The "Voice of Reason" reacted with furor.

And when you are angry,
When you are upset?
There's only one sure place to go,
To put your mind at ease.

(Note: that previous paragraph,
That doesn't even remotely rhyme?
Was for the "Voice of Reason's" Sister,
Who used to proof read these on her time.

I always made sure to include
One paragraph that made no sense.
No rhyme, no reason, no thought --
Just a waste of her intelligence.

And now we can get back,
To the freaking point of this poem.
Which is ... g*d damned if I know,
So let's just keep goin'.)

"Then we open the program,
To see who our referee will be,
And shout out in horror,
Sweet Jesus!  Ed Hochuli!" (c)

To which once Ed reacted,
By laughing and asking aloud,
"Is that a problem, son?"
"No sir!" the response, from a laugh-out-loud crowd.

Sadly, no Hochulis will be on the field tonight,
And Ed never will referee again.
I hate it -- I truly hate it --
When amazing things come to an end.

I hope you have enjoyed this trip,
Back down the lane of history.
Because tonight is going to be a game,
Every Chiefs fan will want to see.

From the moment the gates open,
And the smoke starts wafting aloft,
Until you're stuck in traffic ten hours later,
Flipping your fellow drivers off?

It's going to be a party;
We're going to rejoice --
It's going to be sixty in October!
Wearing shorts is actually a viable choice!

The Chiefs have two advantages I believe,
The Packers cannot over come tonight.
But only one of these advantages,
Can the Packers prep to fight.

To every Packers fan tonight?
Be loud, proud, and possibly crude!
But please try not to be very rude --
And definitely don't become, completely nude.

They can prep for the crowd,
But they can't prep for Coach.
His play calling, his scheming --
Tonight, he will get to boast.

The Chiefs are going to win,
Because they will outwit, outplay, and outlast,
Jeff, Boston Rob and Sandra watching?
Would have a bleeping blast.

So, to answer that question asked above,
That I've yet to address?
About your Upset of the Week?
(stevo sighing in disgust voice) Take a mother f*cking guess.

Chiefs plus four score thirty one,
The Packers only score twenty eight,
In an overtime instant classic,
That for work tomorrow?  Will make us all late.

If you're coming tonight?
Be loud.  Be very, very damned loud!
Pound that seat!  Drink that flask!
Make your dead grandpa proud!

Because tonight?  The lights of our hometown?
The nation will fully see!
And realize there are no greater things in this land,
Than the nation's heartland team, and it's damned proud city!"

--------------------

Again, if you're coming and need a place to tailgate, we should be in our spot on the grassy knoll north of the G30 sign when the gates open.  We'll get you liquored up and properly prepped if need be.

Also, a helpful hint from an Arrowhead Pride reader: when you get inside the stadium, buy an aluminum Bud or Bud Light bottle.  (Or other brand if available ... and please, dear God, let there be Coors Light available.)  Gotta be aluminum.  Then once it's empty?  Pound that bastardo on the seat in front of you, the overhang sign in front of you, the Packers fan in front of you.  It makes a deafening noise.

We need all the help we can get tonight.  This game is winnable.  This team hasn't lost three straight at home since "Fat" Andy's first season (and technically, that turned into a four game losing streak before it was done in 2014).

There's a damned good chance the Chiefs can seriously all but clinch this division tonight.  The raiders are road underdogs, and would fall four back with tiebreakers, if they lose and we win.  The "Super" Chargers are road underdogs, and would fall four back (no tiebreakers), if they lose and we win.  Those people are road underdogs, and would fall five back (with tiebreakers), if they lose and we win.

We could essentially be four clear of the division at midseason with a win tonight and expected help elsewhere.  I'm so ready for this.  I hope you are too.

Let those blue lights flash boys!  It's the Packers time to run!

week seven picks

I have no idea what happened.

I posted the Chiefs / those people pick on Thursday before the game.

It's no longer here.  And it's not only not posted, as it was on Thursday, it's not even in the draft folder to repost.

So screw it.

The pick was Chiefs (-4) 34, those people 24.

Here are the rest of the Week Seven Picks (I'll calculate the season to date totals next week):

* Byes: Steelers, Browns, Bucs, Panthers.  If I was the Browns, I'd have fired Freddie Kitchens this week.  But then again, I'm someone who literally had to pull the car over to the side of the road because I was so completely overcome with tears of joy when Gunther Cunningham was hired as the Chiefs head coach, so what do I know.

* "Super" Cardinals (+2 1/2) 27, at Giants 20.  I kinda, sorta wish we got this one here in KC.  (We're stuck with Vikings at Lions as our noon FOX game.)  I love watching young QB -- especially talented ones -- go at it for the first time.

* at "Shane" Falcons (+3) 31, Rams 20.  It's do or die for the "Shane" Falcons.  Good luck guys.

* at Colts (-1) 35, Texans 31.  I really wish we were getting this one in KC.  (We're stuck with raiders at Packers as our noon CBS game.)

* Jaguars (-3 1/2) 24, at Bengals 10.  The AFC South is going to be one glorious clusterf*ck at 10-6, and I can't wait to see it all play out.  Also, "Good Times Game O' The Week" honors.

* at Bills 28, Dolphins (+17) 14.  Jesus Christ.  The Bills are a THREE SCORE FAVORITE!  (old lady in "gone with the wind" voice) How did we ever get here?!?!?!?!  Also, "ALF Game O' The Week" honors.

* Vikings (pick) 31, at Lions 28.  Yeah, I got nothing.  Other than Go Matt Stafford!  (If you guessed Mr. Stafford is starting for my fantasy football team, congratulations, you're a winner.)

* at Packers 31, raiders (+6 1/2) 28 (OT).  I think this will be the game of the day.  But not of the weekend.  (reader voice) huh?

* at Redskins (+10) 21, 49ers 14.  Upset O' The Week honors ... and "Empty Nest Game O' The Week" honors.  I'm rolling the dice and riding the wave that is "Sur" William Callahan's 'Skins.  Just don't surrender this week like you did your 'Huskers every week, Willy.

* at Titans (-1 1/2) 31, "Super" Chargers 20.  We need this upset.  Bury the "Super" Chargers as deep as possible, as soon as possible.  Make that Monday Nighter in Mexico so meaningless we can hold out Patrick Mahomes "Of The Chiefs" an extra week.

* at Seahawks (-4) 45, Ravens 13.  Lamar Jackson is going to be hurting come 7pm CT tonight.  And I mean hurting.

* at Bears (-3) 17, Saints 6.  A surprising defensive battle that the better team wins.  Also, kudos to FOX 4 for giving us this game instead of Ravens / Seahawks.  This one should be much more competitive (and watchable).

* at Cowboys (-3) 51, Eagles 3.  In the words of my dad, this is going to be an ass kicking of Biblical proportions.  Hide the women and children.  Dak and Zeke are going to open a can of whoop ass on the Eagles.

And finally ...

* at Jets (+9 1/2) 27, Patriots 24.  This is going to be the game of the week.  There is no logical reason to pick the Jets, other than (a) both games Sam Darnold has started, they should have won, and (b) the Patriots always sh*t the bed on the road against a divisional rival.  And it's always either the Dolphins or the Jets.  They've already won at Miami.  This is Gang Green's season.  If they win this one, to get back to 2-4?  Here's their next five: at Jaguars (winnable) / at Dolphins (they'll be favored!) / vs Giants (very winnable) / at Redskins (favored?) / vs raiders (doable!).  The Jets could very well be 7-4 entering December if they win this game.

Come on guys.  One time, with effort: (fireman ed voice) J!  E!  T!  S!  Jets Jets Jets!!!

week six: the game i've waited two years for ...

"The flowers you gave me?
Are just about to die.
When I think about what could have been?
It makes me want to cry …

The sweet words you whispered?
Didn't mean a thing!
I guess our song is over,
As we begin to sing …

Could've been so beautiful!
Could've been so right!
Could've been my lover,
Every day of my life!

Could've been so beautiful!
Could've been so right!
But I'll never hold what could have been,
On a cold and lonely night …"

-- "Could've Been" by Tiffany.

Last Week Straight Up: 8-7-0.
Season to Date Straight Up: 45-32-1.

Last Week Against the Spread: 11-4-0.
Season to Date Against the Spread: 43-34-1.

Last Week Upset O' The Week: (wadsworth voice) This is getting scary.  VERY scary.
Season to Date Upset O' The Week Straight Up: 5-1-0, W5.
Season to Date Upset O' The Week Against the Spread: 5-1-0, W5.
This Week's Upset O' The Week: Browns (+1) over Seahawks.

The Non-Chiefs Picks.

* Byes: Bears, raiders, Bills, Colts.  Allow me to say this about the debacle against Indy last Sunday night (of which I witnessed in person every single painful second): that was a F Minus performance by the Red and Gold.  F Minus.  It's the worst no-show of the "Fat" Andy years since the opener against Tennessee in 2014.  It was, in the words of the great Jim Mora Sr., a "disgraceful performance".  Also, in the words of the great Jim Mora Sr., "the offense sucked, the defense sucked, the special teams sucked, it was a horsesh*t performance.  Horsesh*t!"

And yet … the Chiefs had the ball, 4th and 1, at about their own 40, with a little over five to play, only down six.  And everyone in that stadium -- including those 150 plus people on the visitors sideline -- knew if the Chiefs converted that play, they would probably win the game.

That's how good this Chiefs team is, Chiefs fans.  They can deliver an absolute horsesh*t performance for fifty five minutes … and still control their own destiny.

This is gonna be a really fun marathon to January.  And it resumes with three straight awesome, epic, "you don't want to miss this!" games, beginning at noon tomorrow, in the game I've been drooling over for two years now.

* My Thursday Night pick was at Patriots 24, Giants (+17) 20.
* Bucs (+2) 27, Panthers 20 (Game in London).
* at Ravens 20, Bengals (+11) 17.  "Gordon Shumway Game O' The Week" honors.
* at Browns (+1) 45, Seahawks 20.
* at Jaguars (-1) 16, Saints 10.

* Redskins (-3) 24, at Dolphins 13.  I got woken up (as opposed to the idiotic term "woke up" -- again, if you lazy ass millennials in Ann Arbor, Happy Valley, and Madison had "woke up" on November 8, 2016, and gone to vote, we wouldn't have "House of Wings" in the White House), anyways, I got woken up Monday morning after a long night of football and Power and Light, by a text from "The Voice of Reason", asking me if I'd seen who was taking over the Redskins, after the firing of Jay Gruden.

Had I seen it?  Oh hell yes I had!

Ladies and gentlemen?  "Sur" Bill Callahan is back!

And in case you'd forgotten just how awesome a head coach "Surrender" Willy is, I invite you to look back fondly at the single lowest moment in Nebraska history (and arguably the high water mark in Kansas history): the "Spirit of 76" Game to open November 2007.

I might have to drop the $30 or $40 to order a single Redskins game this season on DirecTV.  I want to see "Sur" William surrender away one more time.  Because just as he surrendered the Big XII North to Kansas?  Let alone Missouri, Iowa State, KSU, and Colorado?

He's gonna surrender his team to the Eagles, Cowboys, and Giants, right into a top two pick.  Where they can yet again whiz away said top flight pick on a quarterback who'll bomb out within three years.

All Hail the Redskins!

* at Vikings (-3) 27, Eagles 23.
* "Shane" Falcons (-2 1/2) 26, at "Super" Cardinals 20.  "Empty Nest Game O' The Week" honors.
* at Rams (-4) 51, 49ers 30.

* at those people (-2 1/2) 13, Titans 10.  (stevo sighing in disgust).  Yes, as of now, I will be there Thursday night.  I want to see their season buried and dead in person.  Work willing.

* Cowboys 24, at Jets (+7) 21.  I actually think the Jets are gonna win this, setting up one epic "everything up to and including the kitchen sink" game next Monday to save the season.  Because yes, Pete Stoyanovich, the Jets season needs to be saved.  I just don't have the balls to pick it.

* at "Super" Chargers 24, Steelers (+6) 21.  "Good Times Game O' The Week" honors.
* Lions (+4 1/2) 28, at Packers 20.

The "Klassy" Kevin Kietzman Tweet O' The Week.

What can I say folks?  Kaptain Klassy is back!

Where to begin?  The Pantsless One having a tweet sponsored by a beauty product for flawless skin?  The Kommander of the Kurbside b*tching and moaning about how he only got one minute on the air to complain that the Chiefs have gotten lazy, that KU is going to get the death penalty, and that the Royals' Jorge Soler is worthless because he wouldn't be recognized on The Plaza on a typical Tuesday?

Or my personal favorite, his kandid komment that he "needs new friends".  Wait -- I thought you had a lil' friend who was going to slice your handicap down to five or better?  Or is the intro to your Twitter feed yet another lie out of "K"KK's mouth?

For the love dude -- not even the late, great Sir William Grigsby ever took out his disgust over demotion on the dog.  I mean, if the late, great Harry ever ran free on the crime-riddled streets of Parkville, it wasn't due to being ditched by his owner.

I think Klueless Kev needs some professional help.  Please -- get help somewhere.  Because this is beginning to border on the insane and/or delusional.  And trust me -- nobody you'll ever meet knows the fine line between insane and delusional, better than me.

The Watching Party Plans.

There are no The Watching Party Plans, as this is a Chiefs game I will be in attendance for.

The Tailgating Plans.

At last check, we are doing a bunch of chilis and soups, to keep things simple.  It's going to be too damned cold tomorrow to do anything else.

We will have a grill going for brats, dogs, and jalapeno poppers.

As always, anyone who wishes to join in, is always welcome and wanted.  Blake, Chance and I will be down to save our spots by 6:30.  Hope to see y'all tomorrow.

Disreputable Mexican Food Truck Update.

So … I'm rolling two sections into one this week, because you could also call this the …

Stevo Drink O' The Week.

(stevo sighing in disgust).

It all began in August, when my good buddy Andrew came down for the 49ers preseason game with his college roommate Brock.  We made a quick liquor store run to get some libations for the tailgate, and Brock wound up buying something he referred to as "The Claw".

Needless to say, that was the phrase of the weekend: "The Claw".

(Note: something about to become decriminalized here in Missouri come January 1st, may have contributed to making that the phrase of the weekend.)

So yes, this week's update … is that I am damned near addicted to the Black Cherry White Claw seltzer.

(brian griffin voice) gay.

Yeah.  Whatever.

Let's move on.

(Pause).

Ladies and gentlemen?  Mr. Conway Twitty!!!!!

The Flashback.

The Chiefs Pontification and Prognostication.

So here we are.

Two years after what "could've been", the two top prospects of the 2017 NFL Draft, are going to duel for what is hopefully the first of twenty, twenty five showdowns.

I cannot possibly put into words, how geeked I am, for Mahomes / Watson I.

If there is any game at Arrowhead you can make this year?

This is the one to make.

Because the great "what if" in Chiefs franchise history … is about to play out, for the first time.

--------------------

For the record, I supported drafting Patrick Mahomes "Of The Chiefs" over Deshaun Watson.  Sh*t, there's Facebook proof out there that I literally melted down into a ball of tears, screaming "yes!  yes!  f*ck yes!" the moment the pick was announced two years ago.

And yet … godd*mmit, watching Deshaun Watson, makes you ask out loud "wait -- did we blow this pick"?

And I know -- for a Chiefs fan to question drafting Patrick Mahomes "Of The Chiefs", is borderline blasphemy.  And yet, I can't help asking the question … because watching Deshaun Watson is that f*cking amazing.

Folks?  We're going to see greatness for the first time Sunday afternoon.  Hopefully for the first of twenty plus times.  The two quarterbacks who are going to define the AFC for the next decade, at least, will finally meet each other (the script voice) for the first time.

I am so f*cking ready for this.

--------------------

For the record, this season:

Picking the Chiefs:

* Straight Up: 3-2-0.  (L Jaguars, W raiders, W Ravens, W Lions, L Colts).
* Against the Spread: 2-3-0.  (L Jaguars, W raiders, W Ravens, L Lions, L Colts).

Is this where I note that last year at this time, I was 5-0-0 both SU and ATS, picking the Chiefs, going into Foxboro?

--------------------

Let the "Could've Been Bowl I" begin.

Because again, I am so freaking ready for this.

It's been a long, long time since I woke up without an alarm for a noon game.  Usually the night before a noon game, I stay over at the Second Parents, because it's far easier to have Mona pound on my door for five minutes to get my ass out of bed, than rely on my hung over self * to drive fifteen minutes at five in the morning, to make Bus-off.

And that truth will hold tonight.

(*: this is a lie.  I never get hangovers.  I know you laugh at that … but it's the truth.  I never get hangovers.  It's both a blessing, and a curse.)

But I suspect I'll be wide awake at 3:30 tomorrow morning … if not sooner.

* at Chiefs 51, Texans (+4) 48 (OT).

This is going to be one to tell the grandkids about.

Don't miss it ...

quick week five picks

“Now all the stars are turning blue;
Just kissed the clock 2:22.
Baby, I know what you’re wishin’ for –
I’m wishin’ for it too!

Now all the lights are flashing gold;
Nobody cares how fast we go.
Our soundtrack’s in the stereo –
This DJ’s on a roll!

Girl?  You got the beat right!
Killing in your Levis!
High on your lovin’?
Got me buzzin’ like a streetlight!

It’s still early out in Cali –
Baby don’t you wanna rally again?

We’ll find a road with no name!
Lay back in the slow lane!
The sky is dropping Jupiter on us
Like some old Train!

We’ll be rolling down the windows –
I bet you we’re catching our second wind!

We don’t have to go home!
We can leave the night on!

We can leave the night on! …”

The "Klassy" Kevin Kietzman Tweet O' The Week.

In kase you missed it, Kaptain Klassy returned to the airwaves of 810 WHB on Tuesday morning, as part of the 20th anniversary look back.

And I have to say, for the first ten, twelve minutes of the nearly half hour konversation, I honestly missed the guy.  Because the first half of the konversation -- looking back fondly at the failed broadcast tower, the 1510 days, the Walk Out (still the most stupid stunt of all time, but whatever, it put "K"KK on the radar), the gamble of leaving FOX 4 for a start-up radio station -- the first half of the konversation reminded me (and I'm sure many of you) of why we listened to and liked the guy in the first place.

But in klassic Kietz style, he couldn't leave well enough alone.

In the last half of the konversation, he claimed Don Fortunato was a "dear personal friend", claimed Patrick Mahomes was looking "shaky" (or was it "sketchy"?  I refuse to re-listen to the audio to recall which it was), and claimed this will be Bill Self's final season as head of the Jayhawks (a claim I don't disagree with, for what it's worth).

It wouldn't be a kall with The Pantsless One unless he flung a few half-truths and outright bullsh*t lies against the wall and saw which ones might stick, would it?

(Pause).  What?  (Pause).  Well, of course he sounds like me!  Why the hell do you think I mock him every chance I get!  If you can't laugh at yourself, you have to brace for everyone else laughing at you, not with you!  (old school biography dude voice) That's a rule!  And I should do a Biography on it!  But I bet I won't!

Because while I have some "shaky" and "sketchy" moments in my past?  To the best of my recollection, none of them involve being told by one of Perfect Village's finest that I can pull my pants back up now.

(old school biography dude voice) Nighty night!

The Watching Party Plans.

There are no The Watching Party Plans, as this is a Chiefs game I will be in attendance for.  And, if things roll the way I expect (and hope) them to, there won't be any The Watching Party Plans until the Chiefs deplane in Mexico City.

The Tailgating Plans.

We will be in our usual spot when the gates open.  The Bus leaves at noon; the Chiefs claim the gates will open at 2:30, but any old-school grizzled veteran of the tailgating process knows those bastardos will be open by 1:30 at the latest.

We're teaming up with the Mahomies folks this week -- they're doing the main course, and we're bringing all the side dishes.  I'm making my jalapeno poppers (should be a solid 120-150 of them given how many jalapenos are in the fridge and still ready to be picked in the garden) ... and yes, I'm being drug out of retirement to make jello shots too.  I even went truly old school and swung through Party City down in Brookside on Thursday to grab a few sleeves of cups and lids, to do them up right.

You're welcome.

And as always, anyone and everyone who desires a place to enjoy some libations, eat some good food, and whip my ass at cornhole (or get yours whipped at beer pong), is always welcome to join in the fun, frivolity, and festivities, in the grassy knoll just north of the G30 sign.

Disreputable Mexican Food Truck Update.

I'm not sure whether this is a good or a bad thing ... but from like 2009 until it closed in early 2017, I was well known enough at my former watering hole (the late, great Quinton's in Waldo), that not only did everyone know me by name (and vice versa), but my drink was waiting for me every day when I'd arrive after work (usually 5:30ish).  Didn't matter if the bartender was Paul, Megan, or the great Jerry himself, that vodka with a drip or three of Sprite was in my spot when I arrived every day for a solid five, six years.

It's now gotten that good (or is it bad?) for me ... across the street at The Well.  Doesn't matter if it's Lindsay, Mike, or Lauren, they always have my double SoCo on the rocks with lime ready when I walk in the door.

I guess it's nice to know that while Quinton's may be gone, my alcoholism is still known enough to exist in that awesome corner of Kansas City at 75th and Wornall.

I love where I live, folks.  I truly do * .

(*: back when Mr. Reason and I were roommates, we had a liquor store by us named Matchette Liquors.  Needless to say, I was on a first name basis with the owner and the employees ** .  The beauty of that relationship was that every time we'd throw a party, Justin (the owner) would sell us our alcohol needs -- especially kegs -- at cost.

(Note: I really, really miss the "Blow Up The Backyard BeerBQ Bonanza".  Almost as much as I miss the IndyCar race the next day in that blessed 105 Texas-style heat.)

Anyways, Mr. Reason always used to joke that "once you move, that place will close within six months!"  The lesson?  As always, Mr. Reason is right.  That place was closed within less than a year of my moving (old school collection dude voice) to the Missouri side, of the state line.  I have always found that to be hysterical -- I single handedly kept a liquor store afloat for five years.  To those of you who think I bullsh*t and lie about my ability to drink?  Losing me as a customer literally closed (at the time) western Johnson County's only credible liquor store, within a year of me moving.  I defy you, to top that.)

(**: this was also the genius of the only exercise plan I've ever stuck to: the last five, six months I lived out there, I walked to the liquor store to get my daily / nightly needs.  A solid half mile there, plus half mile back, carrying a case or a few handles.  It was win-win baby: my body got worked out, and got worked over (rimshot)!)

The Chiefs Pontification and Prognostication.

I think Sunday is going to be one hell of a party, from the moment the gates open, until the moment we all depart.

I think the Chiefs are going to destroy the Colts.

And thus, the pick.

* at Chiefs (-11) 48, Colts 13.

See ya tomorrow ...
