week two chiefs pick

"Well my soul checked out missing,
As I sat listening,
To the hours and minutes?
Ticking away.

Yeah just sitting around waiting
For my life to begin,
While it was all just
Slipping away.

Well I'm tired of waiting
For tomorrow to come;
For that train to come
Rolling around the bend.

I've got a new suit of clothes,
And a pretty red rose,
And a (QB) I can call
My friend.

These are better days!
These are better days, it's true!
These are better days!
Better days with a (QB) like you! ..."

-- "Better Days" by Bruce Springsteen.  Jesus, "Lucky Town" is so, so, so damned underrated ...

--------------------

So much of what I was going to write today, I am choosing to save for next week.  Because it melts in better with what my planned theme for next week is.

So instead ...

--------------------

... allow me to note what my Chiefs weekend to be is, uuh, to be, and then get the pick out of the way, and let you get back to your Friday night.

I leave tonight for lovely -- and Jesus, do I use that term loosely -- lovely Springfield, Missouri, where about fifteen miles south of there tomorrow, my good buddy Ryan will marry his long-time girlfriend, the lovely Alyssa, in what should be one epic ceremony * .

Then, after the wedding and reception (it's at a "winery", and it's a wedding of two great, long time tailgating friends; if there ain't an open bar, you'll know about it, I can assure you of that), I head back to KC overnight ... before leaving at the ass crack of dawn, to spend for what is likely to be for the final time, the way I've spent every raiders road game since at least 2010: in the Garage, in Sioux Falls, with about 25 raiders fans in what we refer to as "Black Hole North".

(Plus the one Chiefs fan up there, the lovely Leslie.  Trust me, Chiefs fans -- beating those people in that place?  When you're outnumbered like 35-6?  Is so f*cking sweet.)

Then Monday -- and please, at the risk of sounding like an elementary principal at kindergarten graduation, please withhold your applause and/or outright laughter until the paragraph is finished -- I am playing in some kind of golf event on Monday up there that is affiliated with the Senior PGA Champions Tour, which is hosting an event next week in Sioux Falls.

Now, to be fair, I have played two practice rounds this summer: one at Royal Meadows over the Fourth of July, and one at Teetering Rocks to open August ** , so I might be prepared for this ... but come on.  It's me on a golf course.  I swear, I broke a basement window or three at the old place on Stubbs ten years ago ... and the window was twenty yards behind my chip shot, aimed at the woods 120, 130 yards in front of me.

(My way of saying: unless someone mentions the name of an ex of mine as I'm teeing off, I'm carding a snowman at least on the hole.  (Shoutout to high school golf at St. Andrews, everyone!))

(Also, if the cart doesn't tip over twice, I've won the battle, if not the war, (jimmy buffett voice) come Monday.  #gijoe)

Finally, on Tuesday, I head home (hopefully), spend a whopping one day in the office, and then spend Thursday, Friday, and (if need be) Saturday, getting The Bus ready for the home opener.

That is my week to be -- five out of six work days off on PTO and/or "work from home" days; one wedding, two football games, three planning days, and a round of golf thrown in for the hell of it.

It is not the week that was -- which is what I'd intended to write about, only to realize, it fits my planned theme for next week better.

But still, for a week to be, it's loaded like ... well, like me on a typical Tuesday.  Struggling to avoid the coffee table, barely nailing the deep end of the couch, to tune in and watch the rock star sitcom lineup ABC has to offer.

That is my weekend and week, to be.

--------------------

(*: I get if you're a girl, why you'd want a ring on it ... but for Christ's sake, explain this to me.  And I ask this as a 42 year old single, straight male, never married, but did live with "The Ex" for a few months (brantley gilbert voice) back in the day.

If you've been living (with benefits!) with a chica for four years, she doesn't want kids, and you're both at least ok with the relationship, why f*ck it up by putting a ring on it?  What f*cking sense does that make?  Just "live in sin" and be happy!  I don't get this need to get married.  Jesus never married.  What's your excuse?)

(**: I'll (probably) never be invited back.  My playing partner -- whose name I believe was Amber (she is (was?) my buddy Jordan's girlfriend) threw up on the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth holes ... then puked on the tenth tee as well, as I tried to get her into New Tito to get her home to sleep off one epic hangover.  Now, to be fair, if you're scared of heights, you'd puke on the third tee at Teetering Rocks too.  Nothing like a 300 foot descent to the green when you're still pushing a 0.27.  And the fifth on a 91 degree day would make Tiger Woods upchuck between the humidity and the swamp critters.

But anyways.

There's drunk, there's ridiculously drunk, and then there's "puking your guts out on 6 of the first 10 holes of a course on a lovely 91 degree morning" drunk.  I've done two of the three.  I've never done the third.  Not even at Indy, be it for a 500 or a Brickyard.  (Pause).  What?  (Pause).  Well of course I meant "yet"; it's supposed to be 87 at tee time Monday morning in Sioux Falls!)

--------------------

So, the pick.

I hate this is the last trip to oakland for the Chiefs.  There's certain things in life that should never be f*cked with.  The raiders playing in oakland should have been one of those things.

I also hate this is likely the last trip up to Sioux Falls for this game.  Because let's be honest here, come next season, where the hell do you think I'm going to watch this game: the cold north ... or Vegas?  Not even my mom has to ask that question, the answer is so obvious.

I hate that greed, Goodell, and utter stupidity (not necessarily in that order ... although all three are related) has screwed over forever one of -- if not the best -- rivalries in the NFL.  Nobody wants this game to go to Vegas, other than degenerate gamblers and/or greedy landlords.  And yes, I may be one of those things ... but I still want the game in oakland, and I rent my house, thank you very much.  #ilovewaldo

I hate this is it, to go to oakland ***.  I hate this is probably it to go to the Garage in Sioux Falls.  I really hate that I have to pack for a week tonight, go over 1,500 miles (aaliyah voice) back, back, forth, forth over the next five days, and when it's all said and done, the Chiefs will still likely be tied with someone atop the AFC West, with the very formidable Ravens coming to Terrorhead next week, to truly kick the season into high gear.

So let me at least relax Damien out there -- this week's pick is not the Upset O' The Week ... and I'm going to pick something I rarely do.

(damien voice) (for the first time ever, confused as hell) what the ...

* Chiefs (-7) 38, at raiders 0.

As "The Voice of Reason" has noted many times in the past (usually to utter laughter, almost always to accuracy) ... ("the voice of reason" voice) "this defense has a shutout in it!"  Yes.  Yes they do.

And Sunday is it.

--------------------

(***: I nailed this pick damned near exactly (it was 29-10, not 29-13).  Gotta love the broken clock being right twice a day ...)

--------------------

Until next time -- hey!  Let's be careful out there ...

week fourteen: the chiefs prognostication ...

“O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant.
O come ye, O come ye,
To Bethlehem.

Come and behold Him,
Born the King of Angels.
O come, let us adore Him.
O come, let us adore Him.

O come, let us adore Him --
Christ the Lord.

Sing, choirs of angels!
Sing in exultation!
Sing all ye citizens
Of Heaven above!

Glory to God!
All glory in the highest!

O come, let us adore Him!
O come, let us adore Him!
O come, let us adore Him --
Christ the Lord! …”

-- “O Come All Ye Faithful”. God bless, the Indy 500 will NEVER be the same with Flo and Jim ...

--------------------

The Chiefs Prognostication:

I wake up every morning, hearing the most annoying “alarm clock” known to at least me: a yapping Yorkie * that lives next door to me.

I HATE that dog.  He robbed me of approximately 1,100,394 hours of sleep during my six month “career sabbatical” earlier this year.

I HATE that dog.  His poops -- and I swear, this is true -- his poops literally stink up my bedroom, when the windows are open, as they (so thankfully) have been for most of the last three months.

If the bark doesn’t get you?  The stink will.  Because despite Karen’s best efforts, her dog always sh*ts right underneath the window next to my bed.  (I have my theories on why, namely “this is God having a bit of fun at my expense”.  But still, it’s annoying as hell.)

I open with this, to note the following:

Is there a more perfect metaphor, than that, for what the Chiefs have become in this season that now stands on the ledge?

The bark of the media -- and the stink of six losses, four in a row -- infuriates you.

Which begs the question -- because there are four things dogs are incredibly gifted at doing -- barking, stinking, screwing and biting.

We’ve endured the barking, suffered the screwing, and are recoiling at the stinking.

Is Sunday going to be when the 2017 Chiefs bite back … or get bit?

--------------------

(*: my parents dog (a Yorkie) is the same way.  Bruno barks constantly, and only poops / pees in one spot: on the corner of their front porch.  Which is concrete. To say my mom is not a fan of that, is a grouse, criminite understatement.  I believe I even heard her drop the s-bomb when he did his business there the day after Thanksgiving.  (Pause).  I KNEW I got it from somewhere!  Other than Uncle Bill, of course …)

--------------------

For as awful as things stink at the moment, this season is not over.

It’s in deep trouble … but it is not over.

Everything that was within reach eight weeks ago, is for the most part still there.  The Chiefs still control their own destiny.  If they sweep the homestand, they win the AFC West.  If they beat oakland and LA, and beat those people (while losing to Miami), they win the AFC West.  Sh*t folks, there’s even a very plausible scenario in play where the Chiefs clinch the AFC West NEXT WEEK ** !

--------------------

(**: the scenario: the Chiefs go 2-0, the Redskins beat the Chargers on Sunday, and the Cowboys beat the raiders next Sunday night.  In that scenario, at 8-6 and two games clear of both rivals, the Chiefs would clinch due to holding every tiebreaker.  Like I said, it’s plausible.  And if you think I sound delusional, I remind you The Immaculate Fourfecta happened.

Also, I pray it happens, so that Peter King can b*tch non-stop for three week about how an 8-8 division winner is hosting an 11-5 wild card team.  First trumps second (or third) Pete.  First trumps second (or third).)

--------------------

But first things first.

If the Chiefs lose to the raiders, it almost doesn’t matter what else happens, because they would hold tiebreaker over the Chiefs (and would essentially move two ahead with three to play).  Now, frankly, the raiders closing schedule is just brutal: at KC / vs Dal (SNF) / at Philly (Christmas Night) / at LA (who already won in oakland).  It’s far, far more likely the raiders lose out, than win out.

(For what it’s worth, the “Super” Chargers close vs Wash / at KC (Sat Night) / at Jets / vs oak.)

The Chiefs MUST win this game, if they intend to save the season.

And yes, Pete Stoyanovich, twenty years later, we’ve finally found a Chiefs season that needs salvation.

And frankly, there’s only two ways the Chiefs can win this game -- let alone the next two to clinch a second straight division title -- and they both have to click on all cylinders.

Let’s look at the first … which was implemented yesterday afternoon.

--------------------

I’ve been saying for three weeks that what this team truly needs is a swift kick up the ass.  They need something to happen to get them “woke up”, to use a phrase I despise with a passion *** .  Yesterday, I believe “Fat” Andy did that, by suspending Marcus Peters for one game -- this game -- for his funny-as-hell-yet-dumb-f*ck-stupid meltdown late in the Jets game.

I argued the moment Mr. Peters left the field that if I was his head coach, I’d suspend his ass for the rest of the regular season.  Because like “Fat” Andy, I saw the golden opportunity for that swift kick up the poop shoot to occur, after Sunday.  Everyone knows Marcus Peters is the only corner we’ve got that can cover worth a sh*t.  If you sit him?  It sends one of two messages to the locker room.  Either (a) we’re screwed anyway, so let’s sit our best player on defense and tank … or (b) as President Truman used to note: “the (buck) **** stops here”.

This was a needed development, even if everyone can (or should) see it for what it is: a last desperate roll of the dice by “Fat” Andy to save a season gone horribly, horribly wrong.

Or, as Jack Dawson noted twenty years ago aboard the “Titanic”: “when you got nothing?  You got nothing to lose.”  The Chiefs currently have nothing -- they’ve lost 6 of 7, the only victory is against arguably the worst team in the NFL (seriously -- would you pick those people or the Browns to win on a neutral field?), and in five of the six losses, “Sir” Alex and the offense had the ball in their hands, either needing a first down to clinch or a score to win, and failed.

Epically failed.

I think “Fat” Andy handled this perfectly.  I love that he met with the team leaders AFTER the decision was made.  He didn’t accept their input.  He didn’t care what they thought.  It was his decision, and you’re gonna choke it down, like it or not.  And if you don’t like it?  You can join Mr. Peters on his couch on Sunday.

It’s a gamble, to be sure.  Sitting the one reliable defender you have with your season on the line is one hell of a desperate last gasp roll of the dice.  Either this is gonna work, and the slide stops … or we’re going down 34-3 to a chorus of boos the likes of which Arrowhead hasn’t heard since The Blackout in 2012.

Which brings me to the second thing that has to occur, to save a rapidly lost season …

--------------------

(***: I am so sick and tired of these alleged left-leaning Democrats getting “woke up”.  Hey, dumba**?  Maybe if you’d “woke up” on November 8th, we’d have won!  Maybe if you’d put down the bong long enough to get to a polling station in Madison, you UW students protesting non-stop, you wouldn’t be protesting!  I HATE sore losers more than anything other than hypocrites.  I’d argue most liberals are beyond both.)

(****: anyone who studies Mr. Truman knows he meant “bullsh*t” instead of buck.  Or pardon me -- “fertilizer”, as Bess kept trying to get him to call it.)

--------------------

And that is us.

The fanbase.

The people whose asses will be occupying seats inside of Arrowhead on Sunday.

I’m not going to waste your time typing some rah-rah, “stand up and shout” speech.  For starters, I already wrote the perfect on fifteen years ago, when another season threatened to spiral out of control after a promising start, when another coaching era threatened to be judged a failure before it had any right to truly be judged.

If you truly need motivation to show up and cheer the Red and Gold on (jimmy buffett voice) come Sunday, then just print off The Week Four Plea, sub in current opponent and players, and show up ready to throw down for as long as it takes to drag this team across the victory line.  Because The Week Four Plea worked -- the Chiefs not only demolished an unbeaten (at the time) Dolphins squad, this was the game best remembered for Trent Green absolutely knocking into the middle of 2004 a Dolphins defender whose name will be familiar to Chiefs fans: Patrick Surtain.  Mr. Green absolutely obliterated Mr. Surtain while throwing down a block for Priest to score yet another touchdown.  (The Chiefs dropped 48 on Miami that day.  Incredibly, it not only was NOT their best offensive day of the season scoring wise … it was their third best.)

Show up prepared to win.  Not lose -- win.  Show up prepared to cheer.  Not boo -- cheer.  Show up prepared to make noise.  Not sit on your ass in silence -- make noise.

If you need a place to tailgate?  You’re always welcome to join us.  We will be in our usual spot -- the grassy knoll to the north of the G30 sign.  We’re sending six people down to keep the idiot who has tried to occupy our spot the last two weeks, out.  (Sending two was barely enough the last two weeks -- we aren’t f*cking around anymore.)  The Chiefs allow you to park anywhere inside Lot G if you have a red reserve pass.  Easily purchasable at the Chiefs website.

You can park across from us, next to us, or out in Lot L for all we care; you're always welcome to join in.

It’s going to be in the mid 50s and bright and sunny at kickoff, per every local television station, with the high peaking at 61 to 63 (depending on who you trust -- I still trust a man who once referred to some of us as “the sorriest group of trick or treaters I’ve ever seen”, Mike Thompson, the most).  The winds should be minimal.  Simply put, God has given us the PERFECT December weather day for Kansas City, for the day the 2017 season will be defined, for better or worse.  (Part I of course; if we survive Part I, then Saturday is Part II.)

Sunday is the season folks.

Please -- only send the faithful, into that stadium.  Only send the believers.

Send you.

--------------------

And now, having wasted your last five minutes, I suppose I owe you a prediction.

And my prediction is this.

This game will not be close.  I truly, honestly believe that.  One team is going to destroy the other.  This will not be a replay of Week Seven, which the raiders won via an untimed down.  Either “Fat” Andy’s last gasp roll of the dice comes up seven or eleven … or the Chiefs suffer loss number seven, and the season’s clock strikes 11:59.

And to be honest, this one is solely and only based on the heart.  Because the head says that the Peters suspension backfires, that derek carr gets his first win at Arrowhead while looking like Warren Moon throwing against Stan Petry, Jeff Donaldson, and Chuck Mincy twenty seven Decembers ago, and this season has the life support pulled from it, and is officially buried next Saturday night.

But the heart … well, allow me to close this down by typing the lyrics of what would have been the theme post, if it wasn’t Chrismukkah season.

--------------------

“You feel like a candle,
In a hurricane.
Just like a picture,
With a broken frame.

Alone and helpless,
Like you’ve lost your fight?
But you’ll be alright --
You’ll be alright!

‘Cause when push comes to shove?
You taste what you’re made of!
You might bend ‘til you break?
Cause it’s all you can take.

On your knees?
You look up,
And decide you’ve?
Had enough.

You get mad;
You get strong.
Wipe your hand,
Shake it off.

Then?
You stand! …”

--------------------

I’ve had enough.

I trust you have too.

And I -- for better or worse -- believe that each and every member of this organization, especially the Fine Fifty Three wearing a uniform on Sunday, have looked in the mirror, and have gotten mad.  They’ve gotten strong.

And they’re ready to f*cking stand.

Which I -- and hopefully all of you -- will be doing a LOT of on Sunday.

Get LOUD!

Get PROUD!

And then, as Blake Shelton would encourage you to do?

As the late, great Herb Brooks said nearly forty years ago: “if you lose this game?  You will take it to your f*cking grave!  (Pause).  Your f*cking grave!”

Sunday?

Please come if you’re faithful … ready to witness the last stand.

And so, my prediction?

(stevo sighing in disgust voice) Take a mother f*cking guess.

* at Chiefs (-4) 38, raiders 13.

Hope to see you Sunday!

the chiefs prognostication ...

“They say bad things happen?  For a reason.
But no wise words?  Are gonna stop the bleeding.
Because she’s moved on, while I’m still grieving.
And when a heart breaks?  It don’t break even!

What am I gonna do,
When the best part of me?
Was always you?  And

What am I supposed to say,
When I’m all choked up,
And you’re OK?

I’m falling to pieces!
I’m falling to pieces!
I’m falling to pieces!
I’m falling to pieces! …

I’m still alive, but I’m barely breathing.
Just praying to a God, that I don’t believe in.
Because I got time, while she got freedom.
‘Cause when a heart breaks?  It don’t break even …”

--------------------

The Chiefs Prognostication:

I have a few things I want to say about Sunday’s defeat to the Steelers, but I want to begin those thoughts, by flashing back to the 1990s.

If you followed the NFL back then, you knew the NFC Title Game every year was going to involve two of three teams -- the Cowboys, the 49ers, and the Packers.  (Every NFC Title Game from 1992 through 1997 featured two of those three teams ... save for 1996, when the Carolina Panthers somehow were given a seat at the grown-up's table.) And somewhat surprisingly, each of the teams owned one of the others … and was owned by one of the others.

The 49ers could never beat the Packers … and always beat the Cowboys.

The Cowboys could never beat the 49ers … and always beat the Packers.

And the Packers beat the 49ers like a government mule … and kept failing to shatter the glass ceiling known as the Dallas Cowboys.

It didn’t matter where Brett Favre faced the Cowboys -- he lost.  Always.  Don’t believe me?  In his first five seasons leading the Packers, the Packers went 0-4 in the regular season, and 0-3 in the playoffs, against the Cowboys:

* 1993 Week Five: Cowboys 36, Packers 14.
* 1993 Divisional Round: Cowboys 27, Packers 17.
* 1994 Week Thirteen: Cowboys 42, Packers 31.
* 1994 Divisional Round: Cowboys 35, Packers 9.
* 1995 Week Six: Cowboys 34, Packers 24.
* 1995 NFC Championship: Cowboys 38, Packers 27.
* 1996 Week Twelve: Cowboys 21, Packers 6.

Seven matchups in five years.  All Packer defeats.  And thus, a narrative began to be born, that both sides of this epic rivalry bought into: until the Packers overcame the demon known as the Cowboys, they’d never truly be great.

(Note: this was a lie, as the 1996 Packers won the Super Bowl … but we were one play away from an eighth Cowboys / Packers showdown in the NFC Title Game, and nobody on either side thought the Packers would win that game, if we’re all being honest here.)

In 1997, the Packers got off to a tremendous start, while the Cowboys … eeh, not so much.  And as Week Thirteen approached, the Cowboys departed for Lambeau at 6-5, fresh off one of the most exciting “how the bloody hell did this just happen?!?!?!” wins of the Triplets era (trust me, I was there), and the Packers stood ready at 8-3, fresh off 0-10 Indianapolis stunning them at the gun.

And the narrative began again: can Green Bay beat Dallas?

And for three quarters, the answer was -- as always -- “probably not”.  Emmitt Smith scored on the first play of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 24-17 (the game was tied at 10 at the half), and you could feel -- be it in Lambeau, or the couch in my apartment in Lake Arlington -- the tide turn.  Dallas was going to somehow, someway, yet again, find a way to win.

Only … they didn’t.  Because Green Bay proceeded to drop not one, not two, but three touchdowns on the Cowboys over the next six minutes, to pull away in a laugher 45-17.

Brett Favre finally had his victory over the Cowboys.  And for all intents and purposes, the Cowboys dynasty died that afternoon.  (I’d argue it truly died two weeks later, on a Monday night against the Panthers, even if it technically limped along a couple more seasons … but it definitely suffered the fatal blow that painful afternoon, twenty years ago.)

I mention this, because as I noted in the Week Six picks, the Chiefs simply cannot beat Ben Roethlisberger.  Ben ran his record to 7-1 against the Chiefs Sunday -- the sole defeat being a truly “how the hell did this happen?” upset for the ages back in 2009.  It doesn’t matter where he faces us -- home or away, regular or postseason, the dude simply wins.  Period.

2006 in Pittsburgh.  2011 at Arrowhead.  2012 in Pittsburgh.  2014 in Pittsburgh.  2016 in Pittsburgh.  2016 in the playoffs at Arrowhead.  And now, yesterday.

In many regards, it’s like peyton manning.  The Chiefs beat peyton once in 2004, in one of the funnest games of the Richard A. Vermeil era * … until the last time they faced him.  The other fourteen times peyton faced the Chiefs, he won.  1999 at Indy.  2000 at Arrowhead.  2001 at Arrowhead.  2003 in the playoffs at Arrowhead.  2006 in the playoffs at Indy.  2007 at Indy.  2010 at Indy.  2012 at Arrowhead and fake mile high.  2013 at Arrowhead and fake mile high.  2014 at Arrowhead and fake mile high.  2015 at Arrowhead.

(Note: the Chiefs did win in Indy in 2011 … a game peyton did not participate in.  Just like the Chiefs beat the Steelers in 2015 … a game Ben did not participate in.)

(Double note: God bless, it’s frustrating being a fan of this team sometimes.)

But then came that finale, Week Ten 2015.  When the Chiefs rolled into fake mile high, so obliterated peyton that he was benched for brock, and emerged with a 0.00 QB rating, more picks (five) than completions (two) and broken feet (one) combined, and the realization that “uuh, it might be time to retire”.

1997 Brett Favre had to not just defeat his biggest nemesis, he had to DESTROY them, to truly level up the rivalry.

The Chiefs had to not just defeat its’ biggest nemesis two years ago, we had to DESTROY them, to tip the rivalry squarely in our direction.

Chiefs fans?

I want one more shot at Ben.  And I don’t care where -- here, there, or Ol’ Pete King’s proverbial neutral field in Wichita.  (Which, probably, wouldn’t be all that neutral, if the Chiefs are involved.)

Because … well, let me explain why.

--------------------

(*: this game also led to my favorite Len Dawson comment of all time.  Chiefs up 45-35 with less than two to play, and peyton throws an interception to Greg Wesley … who begins to try to return it.  Len: “Get down.  This is over.  Jesus, just get -- OOH, nice block!”  It wasn’t quite as great as Bill Grigsby asking a former Chiefs player “how the f*ck are you!” to open an interview on the FOX Pregame Show ** … but it’s still pretty good.  “Jesus, just get -- OOH, nice block!”)

(**: that interview is when they took the proverbial keys away from our Ol’ Pardner, and banned him to The Pavilion on (I’m guessing) a forty second delay.  Thanks, as always, to ("family guy" voice) the fellas at the freaking FCC.)

--------------------

I was at that Monday Nighter in Dallas twenty one years ago, the 21-6 Cowboys victory best remembered for Chris Boniol setting a NFL record (at the time) by booting seven successful field goals.  The last one occurred after the game was out of reach inside of two minutes (do the math, people), and someone let Barry Switzer know the record for most field goals in a game at that point was six, so Ol’ Bar called a timeout to trot Mr. Boniol out there to set the record (and rub it in a hated rivals’ face, always a positive in my book … especially if you’re doing the rubbing).

To say Mike Holmgren (then the Packers coach) was irate, is an understatement.  He admitted as much -- that the Packers ran up the score on Dallas a year later, in retaliation for that field goal attempt.

To say Brett Favre was irate … is a grouse, criminite understatement.

Because the only reason Chris Boniol got his shot that evening, was due to a late Brett Favre turnover, that put the Cowboys in business deep in Packers territory.

Mr. Favre swore that night he’d never forget the insult that was Chris Boniol’s seventh field goal.  (And he didn’t -- he only lost to Dallas one more time in his career (in 1999, in what wound up being a “winner’s in, loser’s out” showdown in Week Twelve), and his last meaningful victory as a quarterback was a 34-3 depantsing of the Cowboys in the 2009 Divisional Round … as a Viking.)

It took something so offensive as to be beyond insulting, to finally get the Packers over the Cowboys hump.

I’d like to think it took the disgrace of Jamaal Charles’ fumble -- the second of two costly touchdowns inside of the last minute of the Week Two defeat to those people -- that finally make “Fat” Andy Reid and this organization do anything and everything to finally give those people the business up the ass they deserve.

(The Chiefs have not lost since against ANY team in the AFC West since that awful night, going 12-0 … including 3-0 against those people in three impressive showings: the game that (almost) ended peyton’s career, “The Doink”, and Dontari Poe pulling a tebow on those demon possessed c-words.)

So here’s my only question exiting Sunday:

Was “the single most bullsh*t catch I’ve ever witnessed live”, the moment the Chiefs finally reached their red line in the sand, against Ben and the Steelers? (Note: do NOT click on that link unless you have a very stiff libation, and/or a very potent joint, readily available. You're gonna need both -- a lot of both -- watching that unfold again.)

Sunday?  3rd and 2, at pretty close to midfield, a little over four minutes to play.  If you were there, you know how loud -- how insanely (and proudly) loud, Arrowhead was Sundayday.  The Chiefs, frankly, didn’t deserve us.

I turned to Jake (the STM I sit by) after second down, and semi-seriously said “here we are again -- same bat time, same f*cking bat channel as exactly ten months ago!”  And damn if it wasn’t accurate.  (Also, props to me for the old school “Batman” reference, right?  #ripmayorwest)  The Chiefs, somehow fighting, clawing, scratching their way back to within two points in a game they had no business winning against the Steelers … who now faced a critical third down that could all but determine the game.

Ten months ago -- January 15, 2017 -- it was a 3rd and 7.

Sunday -- October 15, 2017 -- it was a 3rd and 2.

Both times, every damned person in the stadium knew where the pass was going.

Ten months ago, it was a perfect strike to Antonio Brown, for the first down that all but ended that game.  (There were still a few kneel downs involved.)

Sunday, it was a less than perfect strike to Antonio Brown, that Phillip Gaines pretty much perfectly defended, batted … into the arm and helmet of Terrence Mitchell, who attempted to secure the pick … only to see it somehow land in the hands of Antonio Brown, who went fifty one yards for the touchdown.

I’m going to guess at least a few of you reading this, left after that touchdown with barely four to play, to put the Steelers up nine.  And honestly, I’m not going to rip you if you did.  I contemplated it.  Only, I was focused on the Chiefs sideline after that play.

And I knew -- I freaking knew -- they had one last gasp in them.

Because that sideline wasn’t defeated.

It was p*ssed.

I truly believe the Chiefs and Steelers will meet again in three months.  The Steelers are going to win the AFC Norris, and probably by a comfortable margin.  They’re going to win at least 11 games (they’re currently 4-2, with roadies to Detroit and Houston, plus home games against New England and Green Bay left), and grab at worst the three seed (exactly what they did last year).  The Chiefs are going to win at least 11 games (gun to my head, we lose at Dallas (because we almost never win roadies I attend), lose to Buffalo (that game terrifies me), and lose at those people, to finish 12-4), earn a bye, and with a lil’ luck, somehow at least tie the Patriots to ensure a return matchup would be at Arrowhead.

(The Patriots, also 4-2, still have to play oakland in Mexico, travel to fake mile high and Pittsburgh, and host Atlanta on Sunday night.  Then again, five of their last six are against divisional opponents, so they’re closing at worst 5-1.)

Sunday sucked in many regards.  The Chiefs yet again crapped the bed at home against the Steelers.  They yet again got pushed around at home by a team that really isn’t any better or worse than they are.  They yet again had the ball, with a shot to tie or win, inside of three minutes against the Steelers, and failed.

But Sunday felt different.  It didn’t have the cold, hard reality of a playoff defeat.  It didn’t have the sting of “hey, we finally have a lead … eleven weeks into the season!” to it. It didn't have the embarrassment of "it's 22-0 and we're not even five minutes into this thing yet!" to it.

Sunday felt different.  It didn’t feel like an ending, or an inevitable conclusion, or a reason to projectile vomit in frustration. (OK, fine -- it did feel like that.)

Sunday felt like a turning point.

It felt like a beginning.

And so, here we are.  Week Seven.  The Chiefs have the best record in the NFL (along with the 5-1 Eagles … whose sole loss is at Arrowhead).  They’re 3-1 against teams currently leading their divisions, 2-1 against teams that won their division last year, have faced competition that is 20-9 in games not against the Chiefs, and we now have a chance over the next twelve days to all but end the AFC West division title chase.  The Chiefs can knock the raiders (effectively) five back with nine to play, with a win tonight.  They can knock those people (at least) three back with eight to play, a week from Monday -- and potentially (mike gundy voice) four, if the “Super” Chargers beat those people on Sunday.

Sunday, the Chiefs suffered a gut-punch defeat.  They endured one of the most “you’ve got to be f*cking kidding me!” plays in franchise history with the game nearly on the line … and still, they had the ball, three minutes later, almost at midfield, with 1:08 to play and only needing a touchdown.

They played without nearly forty percent of the starting offensive lineup as projected two months ago.  No Spencer Ware.  No Chris Conley.  No Mitch Morse.  No LDT.  (And no Charcandrick West, no Albert Wilson, and on that last drive, no Tyreek Hill.)  They played without the heart of the defense (Eric Berry); they played without the soul (at least in his mind) of the defense (Tamba Hali).  Their second best corner (Steven Nelson) is still at least a week or two away from seeing action; we’re probably the first team since your early 2000s Giants to start a white dude in the secondary and not get mocked off the field (Danny Sorenson … and yes, the fact he has the same name as my most hated character in television history conflicts me).

The raiders will throw everything -- including the proverbial kitchen sink -- at the Chiefs tonight.  They’ll probably have some success at it, especially if derek carr can get the passing game humming along.  They have the blueprint for how to at least slow down the Chiefs offense -- the Steelers showed the nation how to do it.  This is the worst type of scenario in many regards for the Chiefs to be facing tonight: a desperate yet talented team, at home, in prime time, with quite literally their season on the line.

This is going to be stressful.  This is going to be brutal.  You’re gonna want to fall to pieces at times tonight watching this unfold.

But in the end?  Scroll back up to the beginning of this post.  Some teams just OWN other teams.  Some QBs simply are OWNED by other franchises.  The Chiefs have won five straight, and seven of eight, against the raiders since “Fat” Andy Reid arrived.  The only win derek carr has over the Chiefs was in his first start facing them -- the 0-10 debacle from three years ago.  He’s 0-5 since, with an average margin of defeat of fifteen points, per Adam Teicher at ESPN.com.

Just like Green Bay and Brett Favre when it came to the Cowboys?  Just like the Red and Gold when it came to peyton manning, and comes to Ben and the Steelers?  Just like derek carr and every AFC West team when it comes to the Chiefs?

Until I see it happen, it ain’t gonna happen.

* Chiefs (-3) 17, at raiders 10.  Somehow, someway, “Fat” Andy does what he does best: win.

Full picks for Week Seven to post by Sunday morning.  It won’t be much of a post, since I dumped my efforts into this one … but after going a very Stevo-like 4-10-0 both SU and ATS last week, I’ve gotta get back in y’all’s good graces ...
