decision 2012: stevo's ballot tomorrow

“I always believed in futures –
I hope for better, in November.
I try the same losing lucky numbers?
It could be a cold night, for a lifetime.

Hey now – you can’t keep saying endlessly,
My darling?  How long until this affects me!

Say hello to good times!
Trade up for the fast ride!
We close our eyes while the nickel and dime
Take the streets, completely.

I always could count on futures,
That things would look up.  And they look up.
Why is it so hard to find the balance,
Between living decent, and the cold and the real?

Hey now – what is it you think you see?
My darling?  Now’s the time to disagree!

Say hello to good times!
Trade up for the fast ride!
We close our eyes while the nickel and dime
Take the streets, completely.

Hey now – the past is told by those who win.
My darling?  What matters is what hasn’t been.
Hey now – we’re wide awake and we’re thinking!
My darling?  Believe your vote can mean something!

Say hello to good times!
Trade up for the fast ride!
We close our eyes while the nickel and dime
Take the streets, completely …”

--------------

Tomorrow, ladies and gentlemen, peoples and peepettes, the drunk and the stoned who stumble upon this – tomorrow?

WE have a job to do.

No matter who you opt to vote for, go vote.  The power of the people is something that so much of this world has never known, and never will.  Get up tomorrow morning.  Go stand in line.  Or go at lunch.  Go after work.  Make your voice heard, however inconsequential you think it might be.

I believe this is arguably the most important election this nation has had, since 1860.  The choice is crystal clear, at least for the top of the ticket.  Either you vote to hurl the United States down the un-retreatable road to financially unsustainable socialism, or you vote to hit the breaks and make a hard right, to start the u-turn back to the economic model that built this nation into the greatest the world has ever known, capitalism.  If you believe socialism is the answer, where your potential and income and earnings and status in society hits a hard cap far below what you are capable of accomplishing?  Then please vote to re-elect President Obama and Vice President Biden.

If, like me, you refuse to believe that your potential, your earnings, your job, your LIFE, deserves to be capped by some unnamed, faceless government official who doesn’t know you, or your hopes, or your dreams, or your desires.  If, like me, you believe that YOU, not the government, not other people, YOU AND YOU ALONE control your destiny?  Then vote to elect Governor Romney and Rep. Ryan.

Below, is how I will be voting on Tuesday.  Sample ballot for me was obtained at the Missouri Secretary of State’s official website.  I always disclose, at least to my politically active friends, how I vote, because while I completely agree with the sanctity of the privacy of the voting booth, and respect without prejudice your right to not reveal your choices … I have no problem admitting who I voted for, what ballot measures I supported or opposed, and why.  For me, I am so damned proud that this nation, the greatest experiment in mankind’s history, proof that man does not need a misguided trust in some form of higher being in order to self-govern, self-rule, and establish a respected rule of law, I am so damned proud to live here, to call this amazing social success “home”, that I shout from the rooftops who I support, what I believe, and I back it up with the power of my ballot.  Please, folks – do the same tomorrow, no matter how you decide to vote.

You will notice, I do not vote on strict party lines, and in the interest of full disclosure, I am a registered Democrat from the Reagan / Clinton wing of the party that is so thoroughly disgusted by my party’s nominees for the highest office in the land – namely, the outright embrace of European socialism that has led to 25% unemployment in Spain, a literal economic collapse in Greece, and rioting – yes, RIOTING! – in France of all places, that I have to vote:

* President / Vice President: Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan (R).  The last four years have been the greatest failure in American history, save for possibly the Buchanan administration.  And please, spare me the comparisons of President Obama to President Carter – yes, both are inept, clueless, and in over their heads, but at least President Carter not only balanced every budget, the 1980 budget ran a surplus.    President Obama hasn’t even signed a budget into law, let alone balanced one.

I am voting for regime change, because I believe in fiscal sanity.  I oppose $6 trillion of new debt, with (45,000) jobs to show for it.  I oppose 47% of the populace drawing their primary sources of income from the public treasury (although, in the interest of fairness, this is a stupidly misleading statistic, considering that anyone who is a public servant, teacher, first responder, fireman, police officer, member of the armed forces, or draws Social Security legitimately, is included in that 47% figure.  Still, it’s too high to sustain – no free market economy can sustain higher than 35% tops, and even the totalitarian regimes collapse in the 40% range.)

I oppose nearly 50 million Americans drawing food stamps, up over 15 million from four years ago.  I oppose waiting until 2014 to end the war in Afghanistan – end it now.  (On this point, both sides are dead wrong.)  I oppose the overhaul to welfare requirements this administration issued.  I opposed the stimulus.  (In the interest of fairness, I supported both the financial bailout (TARP), and the bailout of the auto industry, as necessary evils.)

I oppose the Affordable Care Act overall, although there are parts of it that I believe are vast improvements over what the status quo was, and that should form the basis for legitimate comprehensive health insurance reform.  (There is a difference – health care in this country has NO NEED WHATSOEVER for reform.  Insurance?  Oh hell yes it does.  But Care?  Nope.)

I oppose 8% percent U3 unemployment figures every month the President held office, and 15% legitimate U6 unemployment figures every month the President has held office.  I strongly disagree with the notion that some road or bridge built this country’s economy – it’s PEOPLE did, through hard work, long hours, insane dedication, and a belief that there is no limit to what one can accomplish in this country, if you work at it long and hard enough.

To the President’s credit, he did give the order to successfully locate, and remove as a credible threat, the architect of 9/11, osama bin ladin.  To the President’s credit, I believe he has relatively successfully managed the Arab Spring.  And while I feel horribly for the people affected by our inaction, the President has been correct in refusing to get directly involved in the civil war in Syria.  To the President’s credit, he carried through his predecessor’s promises to withdraw from Iraq by 2010, even speeding up the timetable, and Iraq’s government has proven to be sustainable and stable.

Also to the President’s credit, he has come out strongly in favor of equal rights for all citizens, by endorsing the rights of gay couples to wed.  Unfortunately, it took four years of “evolution”, and a timely (planned?) gaffe by his Vice President, to get him to realize that equality for all, means equality for all.  You would think the first minority to hold this nation’s highest office, would understand the need to extend equal rights to ALL its people.  (Unfortunately, Mr. Romney does not support equality for all, which in just about any other election, would be a huge negative against him … but this is not “any other election”.)

At the end of the day, when the only successes you can claim are in the realm of foreign policy, and you ceded your foreign policy to your primary rival and her fellow supporters … and that your Vice President forced you, after you “evolved” on the issue, to embrace equal rights for all under the law?  When that’s all you have to show for the last 46 months, 24 of which you had super majorities in both Houses of Congress, and a compliant Supreme Court to boot?  You do not deserve a second term.

And I will not vote to grant you one.

* US Senator: Claire McCaskill (D).  Ms. McCaskill has done a damned fine job serving my state, and has more than earned a second six year term to represent me in the Congress.  She opposes earmarks for the most part.  (The only one I could find she voted for, was the Kit Bond Bridge.  Anyone who’s made a dash up 29/35 to the gaming establishments in North KC knows, that bridge was LONG OVERDUE and BEYOND NEEDED.  It was NOT a “Bridge to Nowhere”.)

She is a vigilant watchdog of the people’s money.  She has been a moderate voice in the Senate (ranking 50th per most non-partisan rankings of conservative to liberal members of the Senate) at a time this nation needs moderation more than ever before.  While I oppose her support for the ACA, that is the only vote I can think of in six years in which I either did not agree with her vote, or could not reasonably respect her decision to vote as she did.  And again – even though I oppose the ACA overall, there are responsible parts of it that it would be criminal to gut in the event of a Romney / Ryan victory.

Toss in the fact that, while I share her opponent’s belief that all abortion is murder* … his comments on rape are indefensible, and reveal a man simply mentally unfit to hold public office.  My vote is to re-elect a Senator who has earned a second term.

(*: trust me – NOBODY is more stunned at my complete 180 turn on my abortion viewpoints, than me.  Twenty year old me is demanding to know what happened.)

* Missouri Governor: Jay Nixon (D).  If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it.  Governor Nixon has signed four balanced budgets into law, without raising a cent in taxes.  And when you’re dealing with a legislature as dominated by wingnuts as Missouri’s is, that’s an impressive accomplishment.  The Governor has charted a moderate, pro-growth, pro-business environment that has seen the movement of some major corporations across the state line, both from Illinois and Kansas, the most recent of which (Freightquote) will be a major boost to my area of town, District 6.  And trust me – we NEED the economic growth.  DESPERATELY.  (Just drive by the roo-eens of what used to be the Bannister Mall shopping complex to figure that out).

His opponent, Mr. Spence, seems like a nice enough man and appears to be qualified for the job.  But again, if it ain’t broke, why try to fix it.  Governor Nixon has done more than enough to earn my vote for a second four year term.

* Missouri Lieutenant Governor: Susan Montee (D).  This might be the toughest decision on my ballot, if only because our current lieutenant governor, Peter Kinder (the Republican on the ballot), has been investigated for assaulting a stripper in an adult entertainment establishment, and had to reimburse the state for charging hotel rooms he shared with said adult entertainers to the state’s credit card.  I mean, that’s awesome!  You want sleazy sometimes in your public officials, if only to make you feel good about yourself.  And really folks – how can it get any sleazier than knocking around a stripper who won’t commit to a “three hole playoff” (rimshot!)?

In all seriousness, Mr. Kinder is a state-wide joke that does not deserve a third term.  Ms. Montee is the sensible alternative, if only because it’s a safe bet she won’t be running up a night at Chippendale’s on the state’s dime.

* Missouri Secretary of State: Shane Schoeller (R).  Coin flip.  Democrat running is Jason Kander of Kansas City.  No matter who wins, fellow Missourians, we are ALL winners, because Robin Carnahan won’t be drawing a public salary anymore.  And if I’m not mistaken, that means every gravy-training Carnahan is now sitting at home.  That’s good enough.  (Note: if I hate you enough as a politician, that I voluntarily vote for John freaking Ashcroft over you?  You are a HORRIBLE politician.)

* Missouri State Treasurer: Cole McNary (R).  Do you trust a Democrat with your money?  And I ask that as a registered Democrat.  Do you trust a Democrat to be responsible and sensible with your taxpayer dollars?  Cause I sure as all hell don’t.

* Missouri Attorney General: Chris Koster (D).  Another “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” vote.  Mr. Koster has done a solid job in his four years on the job, and Republican-turned-Democrat-to-win from Harrisonville deserves another four years in the job.  Put it this way – Mr. Koster could literally screw a court reporter on a desk in a defendant’s waiting area while various other court officers “watched on a personal level”, while destroying evidence that proves a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood is baseless in fact … and all he’d manage to do is match what’s gone on in this office in Kansas the last six years.

* US House of Representatives (5th District): Jacob Turk (R).  My current Representative, the former mayor of Kansas City, Rev. Emanuel Cleaver III, or “Sleazy Manny Cleaver” as I call him, not only never deserved this office in the first place (hey, passing on NASCAR!  That was brilliant!  No, really Manny – Jackson County couldn’t have used the Village West / Legends type growth you so geniusly handed to Wyandotte County!).  Mr. Cleaver currently has the taxpayers on the hook for literally millions of dollars in a failed car wash business he owns, that he has defaulted on the loan payments for.

For that reason alone, he must be retired to whatever congregation is stupid enough to consider this man a legitimate representative of the Christian faith.  (Although, to be fair, he’s at worst the third worst “representative” of Christ on Earth, behind Reverend Jesse Jackson and Reverend Al Sharpton, who I gotta admit, I cannot WAIT to see react to the election results tomorrow night on MSNBC.)

* State Senate (9th District): Kiki Coles (D).  Running unopposed.  Besides, how can you vote against someone named Kiki?

* State Representative (27th District): Bonnaye Mims (D).  Running unopposed.  Besides, what the hell is a Bonnaye?

* Jackson County Sheriff: Mike Sharp (D).  Running unopposed.  Having spent an unplanned few hours in Mr. Sharp’s penal system over the last four years, I can confirm it’s a professionally run, semi-efficient operation that gets you bonded out within a few hours, and doesn’t require you to shower up before leaving.  That’s good enough for me.

* Jackson County Prosecutor: Jean Peters Baker (D).  A worthy successor to Mike Sanders.  She has more than earned a second term.  Ms. Peters Baker is running unopposed.

* Missouri Supreme Court: NO to retaining George W. Draper III.  The Missouri Supreme Court outrageously upheld the new restrictions on adult entertainment establishment, uuh, entertainment.  Every one of those people on the ballot is getting a “HELL NO!” vote to retainment from me.

* Missouri Court of Appeals: NO to retaining Cynthia Lynette Martin, NO to retaining Thomas H. Newton, NO to Gary D. Witt.  See former Sen. Matt Bartle’s outrageous anti-strip club legislation that these cowards upheld.  And before I face prosecution from these misguided idiots – I WILL ensure I am at least six feet … AND seven and a half inches away from the ballot when I cast my vote on their retention to the bench.  (pause).  OK, ok fine – six feet and six and a half inches.  Talk about ruining the fantasy …

* Missouri 16th Judicial Court: YES to retaining Justine E. Del Muro (Division 4), YES to retaining James Kantazar (Division 5), YES to retaining Charlie McKenzie (Division 13), YES to retaining Marco A. Roldan (Division 16), YES to retaining Jack Grate (Division 17).  I’ve had no dealings with the Missouri 16th Judicial, so there’s no reason to fire these fine upstanding members of the bar that I can see.

* Missouri Associate Court Justices: YES to retaining Kenneth R. Garrett (Division 26), YES to retaining Vernon E. Scoville (Division 28), YES to retaining Robert L. Trout (Division 32).  Again, no personal issues or involvements in the last four years.  That’s gotta be some kind of record for me, right?

* Missouri Constitutional Amendment Three: HELL NO to amending the process for how judges are picked to the bench.  This system we have is not only not broken, it functions so well that every state in the nation has pretty much plagarized it.  Here’s a hint, religious zealots: if you don’t like these pesky judges upholding the Constitution?  How about you take a good, long hard look at the first part of the First Amendment, and think long and hard about how much you REALLY want a judge “reinterpreting” what that document says.

* Missouri Statutory Prop A: YES to allowing local control of police and fire in St. Louis.  God forbid the damned city control its own police authority.  Plus, if this passes, then local control here in Kansas City goes on the ballot next.

* Missouri Statutory Prop B: NO to raising the cigarette tax.  Let me get this straight – we approved the lottery because it would “finance our schools to a satisfactory level”.  We approved limited riverboat gambling because it would “finance our schools to a satisfactory level”.  We amended that approval to “boats in a moat” because it would “increase financing for our schools”.  We amended that amendment to “open boarding” because it would “increase financing for our schools”.  We then amended that amendment to the prior statutory proposition to allow 24 hour gaming because it would mean “more money for our schools”.  And finally, we unshackled the last limits on any form of casino gambling, the $500 / 2 hours loss limit, because of the “revenue growth for our schools”.  Uum, guys?  AT WHAT POINT ARE THE SCHOOLS GETTING ENOUGH DAMNED MONEY?!?!?!  Because WE’RE THERE!  If they can’t make due on over $1 BILLION in additional revenue in the last 15 years?  Then fire every damned person affiliated with school budgeting and get someone in with a clue!  You give me a $1 billion windfall, AND all the time I need to allocate the funding adequately?  I’ll allocate it adequately, and that’s with the $10 million or so I’m skimming illegally off the top to my newly founded Swiss bank account!  Good God.  STOP.  TAXING.  US.  NEEDLESSLY.

If someone is stupid enough to think that putting something that is ON FIRE in their mouth, and then INHALING said burning object, if someone is so f*cking stupid that they think doing that 20-30 times a day is a safe, healthy idea?  Then let them do it!  Nowhere in our nation’s founding laws does it say we have to legislate against stupidity.  So please, stop doing it!

* Missouri Statutory Proposition E: NO to banning the forming of state health exchanges.  This is the height of stupidity.  Whatever you think of the Affordable Health Care Act (and I opposed it), it is the law of the land until otherwise overturned.  Why you’d vote to screw yourselves out of any available federal funding for health care, on some misguided zealous principle, is beyond me.

And the final issue on my ballot:

* KCMO Special Election 1: YES to raising mandatory retirement age of judges from 65 to 70 to match state regulations.  You have to be some special level of stupid to vote no on this one.

However you want to vote tomorrow, just make sure you vote.  Millions upon millions of our citizens, brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, and ancient ancestors have literally given their life, for the right far too many of us take as a given.  It’s NOT a given.  Show up tomorrow and let the world know what you think.

why 89 days from today matters

"There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me, because they want to give something back.  They know they didn't -- look, if you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own.  You didn't get there on your own!  I'm always struck by people who think, well, it must have been because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than anyone else.  Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hard working people out there.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have allowed you to thrive (in).  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you've got a business?  You didn't build that.  Somebody else made that happen!"

-- President Obama, speaking to supporters in Virginia, July 13, 2012.

--------------------

If you've ever seen "Footloose", you know there's a scene, about twenty minutes from the finish, when Reverend Moore takes the lecturn on Sunday morning to deliver his sermon mass.  He knows he's one hundred percent wrong in his opposition to the proposed dance -- not necessarily because his logic is flawed ... but because he knows he's clinging to a belief that simply defies logic.  As Ren noted earlier that week before the City Council: "maybe there was a time, and a place, for this law.  But that time, and that place, no longer exists."

So the good Reverend opens his sermon by noting that "today, I stand before you with a troubled heart", then proceeds to explain why he (and his supporters) were wrong, and closes by urging his fellow parishioners to pray for their children's "future endeavors".

The reason why he was wrong?  Why his logic was flawed, outdated, completely incorrect?  As the good Reverend so astutely notes: "how will we ever trust our children, if we don't give them the chance to prove themselves trust-worthy".

I open with that, because when I see the President, our President, MY President, make a statement that what I have attained (or not attained) in life is NOT because of my intelligence, is NOT because of my hard work, but rather, is due to everyone else paving the way for me?  I am BEYOND offended.

Screw that -- I'm madder than hell.

Mr. President, your roads, your bridges, your schools, your teachers, your support?  It gave me a playing field, the same playing field as every other person in this country.  It's level.  It's called "opportunity".  Every child in this country has it, regardless of their economic status.  EVERY child is guaranteed an education through his or her 18th year of life.  What they do with that education is entirely up to them.  Please, sir, don't insult my intelligence by suggesting that because I took advantage of that opportunity, that those who didn't suffer because of me.

I don't hold a college degree from a reputable, accredited university (now a BCS conference member!  (brent voice) Hook 'em Horns!  Oh wait, wrong Texas school ...) -- Sir, I did not graduate with said major in business administration, and minor in US History, in 3 1/2 years because US75 "paved" the way for me to get there, because Dr. Bamford managed to show up at 8am every Tuesday and Thursday to teach me basic marketing principles, because Dave and Vineet and Frank and Wes and Jess and Becky and Mike and Niko and Preston and Tanner and (insert various project partner here) managed to "carry me over the top".

Mr. President, I EARNED my degree.  NOBODY gave it to me!  I reached out, busted my ass, and EARNED it!  Six months early to boot!

(Roads, bridges, and teachers be damned.)

Mr. President, I haven't spent the last thirteen years as a reinsurance accountant, fairly well respected in (at least the local) industry, because the Lewis and Clark Viaduct "paved" my way to work every morning for seven years, the Grandview Triangle paved the way to work for five years, and the Metro motors me there every morning for the last six months.  I EARNED that respect, with said respectable salary, because I showed up and worked harder, longer, and better than my colleagues.  NOBODY gave me my job.  I interviewed.  Some person I didn't know gave me an opportunity.

And I took it, and EARNED what I have today.

Mr. President, earlier today, in my work email inbox, I had my fourth request this year to interview with another company for what I currently do, a request sent by a former boss of mine.  The internet that your government sat on and did nothing with for three decades?  Did not make that request possible.  Companies like Compuserve and AOL, who saw what the Internet could be?  They made receipt of that email possible, by investing hard work, labor, and intelligence into taking a seed of an idea your government sat on for thirty years, and making it into something great.  And no roads, bridges, or other assorted forms of transit were involved, unless you count Mr. Clinton's "Bridge" to the Twentieth Twenty First Century.  And sorry, but any "bridge" that leads to a stained blue dress and a national disgrace, isn't one I'm interested in traveling on.

Furthermore Sir, no teacher, road, bridge, or government program made my former boss asking me to work for him again, happen.  I -- and I ALONE -- made that possible, by proving myself worthy of the financial investment hiring me would be.  I know this might surprise you, Sir, but I have pride in the fact that former employers seek to hire me.  In this regard Sir, you are one hundred percent correct when you note that "you didn't build that".  Because I DID Mr. President!  Not you!  Not your bloated budget, not your 48.2% of the populace living on our money you're laundering from us via the Treasury -- I DID!  And NOTHING you say can take that fact away, Sir!

Sir, I work in a highly specialized field in the insurance industry.  Simply put, either you sink, or you swim.  There's no "floating" when it comes to reinsurance.  Either you rise or you fall, based on your intelligence, hard work, effort, and skills -- roads / bridges / government handouts be damned.

This ... is why any person who supports your re-election in 89 days, Sir, needs to have their head examined. Despite the pride I take in who I am?  I am not the success I should be, and I'll be the first one to admit it.

But if I am not the success I should be?  It isn't because some damned road collapsed to keep me from getting there.  It isn't because I had a dyslexic English teacher my junior year in high school*.  It isn't because of some rich white guy holding me down.

(*: that actually is a true statement: our junior year English teacher was dyslexic.  We even called him "Mot".  (God help you if you can't figure out why.)  This led to the funniest prank call in the history of prank calls, when Jasson dialed him up one night pretending to be from the American Dyslexic Society.  I have no idea how Mot didn't hear me and Gregg literally crying from laughing so hard in the background ... or how Jasson held it together on the phone.  That might be the "Three Amigos" finest hour.  And to Mr. Obama's credit, it did involve a teacher, so maybe he has a point?  Nah.  Also, my mom (a 30 plus year teacher) overheard the prank call ... and was laughing her ass off right along with us.  Every once in awhile, Mom can pleasantly surprise you ... )

Sir, I am comfortable with who I am, with how I live, with what I earn, with the job I hold.  Comfortable for me?  Is perfectly acceptable.  But if I'm not as well off, as good-to-do, as driven in my job or my life as I should be?

Then it is ENTIRELY and COMPLETELY because I chose NOT to be.

My brother, God love him, is extremely career driven.  He's also a tremendous father and husband, don't get me wrong.  But my brother's career is his passion, it's what drives him.  Put it this way -- my brother would give up a few years off the back end of his life, to have a better position and salary today.

Me?  I wouldn't.  I'll be the first to admit it -- I'm a laid back dude.  I don't take life seriously.  Any day that ends on a comfy pillow after a couple vodka tonics, is a winner in my book*.

(*: I'm 35, single, and have no interest in marriage or kids.  Also, I enjoy nights on the deck smoking a Macanudo and/or medicinally legal tobacco-like product, with a glass of merlot while listening to a Buffett concert on "Radio Margaritaville", or engaging in pleasant conversation with an attractive female.  I also have been told on at least two occasions that I look "hot as hell".  Ladies?  I'm willing to listen to your propositions ...)

Do I wish I was more driven, more motivated, more dedicated?  Sure I do.  But do I think that people like my brother, or "boasheao", or "The Voice of Reason", people who have busted their ass, maximized their opportunities life has handed them, and are driven to be the best they can be, do I think THEY should pay for my unwillingness to race to the top of the hill?

HELL.  NO.

And THAT'S what this election is all about.  Either you believe in rewarding success ... or you believe in punishing it.  Either you believe that people who work hard, play by the rules, and dedicate themselves to what they do deserve the very best life can hand them ... or you believe that by doing that, they screw over the lazy guy sitting on his couch pounding Busch Light's while smoking a bowl.

Barack Obama?  Wants to take from the motivated, and give it to that bum on his couch, already drawing God knows how many benefits off our tax dollars.

Mitt Romney?  Believes you rise and fall on your own merits.  If you choose to sit and bake?  Great.  Do it under a bridge, on your own dime and time.

I know, as a Democrat for social reasons, that I have many, many issues with the Republican ticket, whatever it winds up being.  But none of that matters.  The only thing that matters in this election, is how do you feel about the value of work.

If you think success is earned?  You vote Romney.  If you think success is only attained by fucking over everyone underneath you?  You vote Obama.

I still believe in an America, where more people believe success is earned, than failure is rewarded.  In 89 days, we'll find out if I'm right.

Because if I'm wrong ... God save this country.  Because if I'm wrong, and Mr. Obama wins re-election?  What's happening in Greece, in Italy, in Spain?  Is going to look like a fucking picnic with a cherry on top come February 2014 ...

a potpourri of thoughts ...

A bunch of one hitters to try to get caught up on stuff …

* This week’s “Smash” was phenomenal.  Absolutely amazing.  Seriously, if you haven’t caught this show, uum, what’s your excuse?  What the hell else is on at 9pm on Mondays, WWE Raw?  A crappy remake of Hawaii 5-0?

Here’s what I really dig about this show – every viewer knows that either Karen or Ivy is going to wind up playing Marilyn in “Bombshell” (the musical being made on this show), even if Uma Thurman has arrived for the part (through the rest of season one).  For what its worth, my money is on Ivy somehow regaining the job, despite her drug-induced meltdown last week (in arguably the best original number the show has done to date, “The Higher You Get, The Farther The Fall”).  Yet despite the fact that everyone knows how this is going to end, albeit unsure of the ultimate “winner”, the journey to get there is so freaking spectacularly good, that you don’t mind that the producers are in a bigger stalling pattern than “Lost” ever was in during season three (when we got a horrific 43 minute episode on how Jack got a tattoo.  Yes, that was an actual episode of “Lost”.  Trust me – as great as the last two seasons were, you had to wade through, in the words of Andy Dufresne, “500 feet of pure shit to get there”.)

Look it, I’m not a big theater guy.  I’ve seen exactly two musicals in my life, and one I was required to attend while in high school.  (OK, technically three, if you count the motion picture “Evita” as a musical, which I don’t – it’s a movie, albeit a shockingly entertaining one.)  “Smash” in theory should have zero appeal to me.  But the way they’re developing the characters, the decent back-stories developing – hell, even the whole “Frank leaves Julia” subplot that should be blowing up in this show’s face is actually working for me, and anything that gets Julia’s atrociously acted son Leo on my TV screen is a bad thing.

Love how the show is playing out.  Also digging this week?  My favorite scene of the show so far, Ivy reflecting back on how far she’s fallen over the last nine weeks – from the star of a Broadway play of Marilyn Monroe, to unemployable due to her own drug dependency issues – through the words of Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway”.  To be fair, “Breakaway” is my favorite Kelly Clarkson song* … and I LOVE how “Smash” somewhat reinvents it, by toning down Kelly’s euphoric / uplifting finish to the song, and instead turning it into a depressing reflection of where Ivy is at this point, right down to the nail in the coffin, seeing Derek (the director and her lover) escorting her replacement, Karen, into rehearsal.

(*: as great as Ms. Clarkson is, and as huge a fan of "Idol" as I am ... nothing else she has done even comes CLOSE to "Breakaway" for me.)

It’s tough to look at life when it feels like you’re going down the crapper.  It’s tough to be anything but negative and down on yourself when you look back at failed opportunity.  I think this scene perfectly nailed it.  Give “Smash” a chance, readers.  Every episode is available for free on Hulu, or for pay at iTunes.  (All the songs, both original for the show and covered pop hits, are also available via the same distribution channels.)  You won’t regret getting caught up in this show.

* I have intentionally kept quiet on this site regarding the Trayvon Martin travesty to this point, because (a) I wasn’t there when it happened, (b) it seems reasonable to assume, based upon undoctored video and tape, that SOMETHING physically violent went down, and (c) as usually happens in a racially-tinged incident, both extremes need to be sent to the naughty chair for a lengthy time out.

Having said that … George Zimmerman absolutely should spend 7-10 in prison for his crime.  And yes, he did commit a crime.  Whether that is the crime of killing an unarmed 17 year old walking home with a bag of Skittles … or whether it was racially motivated and was a so-called “hate crime”, the bottom line is that the 911 operator ordered Mr. Zimmerman to cease following Trayvon Martin, and he FAILED to obey the order.  As sadly tends to happen in incidents like this, defenders of Mr. Zimmerman will argue there are two victims here, Trayvon and George.  And they would be wrong.

The only victim here is Trayvon Martin, shot in his own neighborhood by an out-of-control security guard with an appalling inability to obey orders from a superior.  (To say nothing of the obvious question: if Mr. Zimmerman felt sufficiently suspicious of a black teenager out in the rain in a hoodie … why was HE out in the rain?  Other than to irrationally profile people he deemed suspicious?)

I wish the charge had been manslaughter, because he’s absolutely guilty of that, and should pay for his crime.  I doubt 2nd degree murder will stick, because that requires pre-meditation, and I don’t think Mr. Zimmerman walked outdoors that rainy night with the intent to kill someone.  I couldn’t vote guilty on 2nd degree murder.  I doubt a Florida jury of his peers will either.

Which means that yet again, a young black man is gunned down entering the prime of his life in this country.  That’s an outrage.

* But not half as outrageous as the racists using this for their own personal advancement.  And I’m looking solely and completely at you, Reverend Al Sharpton.  Reverend Al is usually a favorite on this site, because he’s so over-the-top cartoonish that you can’t help but laugh at most of his takes on the news of the day.  I mean, this is a man who actually asked President Bush where his “40 acre and a mule” were, for crying out loud, and I’m fairly certain Reverend Al wasn’t alive in 1866 to get said 40 acre and a mule the government promised to freed slaves.

But Reverend Al’s reaction to this story has been appalling.  Ditto Lewis Diuguid of the KC Star, who’s never met a scenario in which he can’t envision racism, and I would include the color of cheese on his burger in said scenarios.  (It’s swiss cheese!  It’s white!  It’s racist!)

Is the death of Trayvon Martin tragic?  Absolutely.  Was it 110% preventable?  Absolutely.  Was it motivated by racial hate on the part of another minority?  I highly doubt it.  Reverend Al, I can’t put it any simpler than this – it is people like you, with the title “Reverend” in your name, that 110% completely explains my refusal to step foot in a church on a voluntary basis.  You are a disgrace to your alleged faith, you are a disgrace to this nation, and you absolutely are a disgrace as a human being.

* The Boyz N Blue open 3-3.  Should have been 4-2, yesterday’s meltdown was every bit the disgrace Reverend Al is … but no sane Royals fan can complain about opening 3-3 on the road.  Especially when 2 of those 3 wins are against a virtual playoff lock in the Angels.

What really has me encouraged so far, is the starting pitching.  Bruce “C’mon” Chen is the only starter to go twice … and he’s given up 3 runs in 11 innings.  In fact, per ESPN.com, here are the Royals starters stats through the first week of the season:

Chen: 2 starts (0-0), 11 IP.  7 hits allowed, 7 Ks, 2 BBs, 2 ERs, 1.64 ERA, .82 WHIP.
Hochever: 1 start (1-0), 6.1 IP, 5 hits allowed 4Ks, 2 BBs, 2 ERs, 2.84 ERA, 1.11 WHIP.
Sanchez: 1 start (1-0), 5 IP, 4 hits allowed, 4 Ks, 3 BBs, 2 ERs, 3.60 ERA, 1.40 WHIP.
Mendoza: 1 start (0-1), 5.2 IP, 5 hits allowed, 2 Ks, 4 BBs, 1 ER, 1.59 ERA, 1.59 WHIP.
Duffy: 1 start (1-0), 6 IP, 1 hit allowed, 8 Ks, 4 BBs, 0.00 ERA, 0.83 WHIP.

Uum, yes, please?  I know its only one time through the rotation, but good grief!  The most runs they’ve given up this year is 5 (on Opening Night, and Wednesday in extra innings).  The other four outings?  3, 3, 1, and 0.  You’re going to be in a pennant race if you don’t give up more than 5 runs in any outing over a reasonable stretch of time.

Now comes ten straight at home, beginning tomorrow afternoon against Chief Wahoo and his Tribe, then continuing with two legitimate playoff threats, the AL Central champion Tigers, and the Blue Jays.  If the Royals can stand at say 10-6 when this homestand is over?  Season.  Freaking.  On.

* Finally, as if praising “Smash”, venturing into the Trayvon Martin deal, and praising the Royals isn’t giving you enough … we now know who the 2012 race is going to be: Mitt Romney against Barack Obama.

And for the first time that I can remember (ok, that’s a lie … first time since 2000), there’s zero doubt in my mind entering the general election phase of the campaign who I am whole-heartedly endorsing and supporting.

And that person is … Willard Mitt Romney.

Oh, don’t worry – I still plan to cover the Conventions like I did four years ago, because I can’t help myself.  I mean, four straight nights, over two straight weeks, of nothing but politics at its finest?  Sign me up!  But I’m endorsing Mitt Romney for one reason:

Are you better off now than you were 3 ½ years ago?  Did Barack Obama’s “hope and change” work out for you?  Is your home worth more, your savings account more profitable, your 401k worth more, your taxes lower, government spending at least level, to what it was when President Bush left office?  If your answer to any of those question is “yes”, then you’re either (a) in a very small minority, or (b) a liar.

Mitt Romney is the ideal candidate to me, save for HRC herself.  And I know, I know – the conservatives who read this site might read that previous sentence and cringe in fear.  But trust me – I do NOT want to see a left-of-center nation.  I want a nation at the 50 yard line.  Yes, I am a social liberal*, but I am a fiscal conservative, and I am appalled at what has happened to federal spending the last 3 ½ years.  Hell, I’m beyond appalled – I’m angry enough to endorse the Republican presumptive nominee five months before he actually accepts said nomination.

(*: I am as far left-leaning on social issues a person as you will ever find, save for two: I think both extremes are insane on the gun-control debate … and I am not pro-choice.  Sorry my liberal friends: if executing someone who has committed a crime is murder (aka the death penalty, which I believe is unjustified murder), then what the hell is abortion, other than murder?  I love liberal logic sometimes …)

I flash back to Labor Day Weekend 2008, when I spent the weekend down at the Lake with Mickey’s family and some friends.  And they could not have been nicer, as always – pretty much all of DJ’s friends and family are the most personable, wonderful people you could ever want to meet.  If you were to look up the word “hospitable”, “friendly”, “accommodating”, look up those words?  You’d find photos of DJ’s friends, family, and friend’s family next to those words.  Having said that … they’d all bought in hook, line, and sinker for Barry’s hope and change.  It so repulsed me that (a) I left a day early to avoid any more political talk, and (b) I realized then and there that I just wasn’t a true Democrat anymore.

So as a member of the independent middle … Mitt Romney is my guy, and I hope he’s yours as well.  He’s at least moderate on social issues.  He detests the welfare state even more than I do*.  And he sure as all hell wouldn’t invade Iraq based on the word of Donald Rumsfeld, or to avenge a wrong done to daddy, as our previous President did.

(*: I have no problems, none whatsoever, with legitimately needy people receiving government assistance via my tax dollars.  After all, the sole and only reason why government has to help out the less fortunate amongst us, is because the Church has epically failed to do so.  (Sorry, religious folks who read this, but you know I’m 110% correct in that previous sentence, and it doesn’t take sitting in your fancy pew at 143rd and Roe every Sunday, money far better spent on helping the poor and destitute, to realize that.)

What I have serious issues with, is with people too f*cking lazy to attempt to improve their lives receiving housing, food stamps, and other forms of assistance, just because they can.  God knows my life has been anything but perfect, but I haven’t received one cent of government help in my life, save for four months of unemployment pay when I was laid off six years ago.  Able bodied people drawing government checks for no legitimate reason(s) piss the shit out of me.  They should be jailed for fraud.  Just because you “can” draw a check, doesn’t mean you “should”.  If you have an ounce of self-dignity, you avoid government help like the plague.  People who embrace it?  Uum, let’s just move on before I say something I might regret.)

Mr. Romney is a moderate on the social issues, gets it on fiscal issues, and (like President Obama) will seek the happy middle on foreign policy (Mr. Romney would not be making a mistake to keep Secretaries Clinton and Panetta in place in their current jobs, much as Mr. Obama kept Robert Gates in place as Secretary of Defense when he took over).  My kind of guy.

Now nominate an austerity conservative as Veep sir (to ensure the Ryan Budget gets through the Senate), and let’s get this nation back to where it needs to be: at the 50 yard line, with both sides outraged at how moderate and sensible our government is.  Because clearly, that didn’t work in the 1980s and 1990s …
