dnc night one: the tone is set ...

“If I could turn the pages
In time?  Then I’d rearrange
Just a day or two.
(Close my, close my, close my) Eyes.

But I couldn’t find a way;
So I’ll settle for one day?
To believe in you.
(Tell me, tell me, tell me) Lies.

Tell me lies!
Tell me sweet little lies!
Tell me lies!
Tell me, tell me lies!

Oh no, no –
You can’t disguise!
You can’t disguise –
No you can’t disguise!

Tell me lies!
Tell me sweet little lies!” …

--------------------

I am still working on the recap of “House of Wings”’s acceptance speech.  I hope to have it up by tomorrow.

But in the meantime, since time marches on, no matter what we do …

--------------------

There were precisely three solid to almost great speeches last night in Philadelphia.  One of them was totally expected.  One of them I’m guessing maybe one out of every seventeen people who read this, actually caught.  And the third came from a man who I believe Secretary Clinton is going to really regret passing over for the Vice Presidential slot.

But a lack of high-quality speeches in and of itself, isn’t a problem for the DNC and the Democrat candidate this year.  In fact, I’d argue it’s a blessing in disguise.  Let’s face it, Secretary Clinton is just not a good public speaker.  She runs a very real risk of being overshadowed every night at her convention.  The only person who even approached a level of greatness last night was First Lady Michelle Obama, who gave one of …

… (stevo sighing in disgust at even having to say this) …

Look it.  If you cannot take a step back – regardless of your politics – and appreciate a great speech when you see it, then why bother to watch any speech?  I would never vote for Mrs. Obama’s husband.  But that was a tremendous speech she gave last night.  If you cannot take a step back, and realize the power of one paragraph she spoke:

“That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needed to be done (sk: I’m adding italics for the money shot) so that today?  I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves.  I watch my daughters – two beautiful, intelligent, young black women – playing with their dogs on the White House lawn!”

If you cannot appreciate the power of that one statement of truth, then go bury your head back in the sand, or crawl back under whatever rock you’ve been living under.  I noted this eight years ago, and given the incredible and inspiring progress made for true equality in the Obama years, it deserves to be hammered home even more just how much for the better this nation has become in the last fifty years – when Mr. Obama was born?  It was illegal for his parents to marry.  Today?  You are free to marry the legal spouse you love, free and clear from indwelt discrimination from the government, and ideally from any of your fellow citizens.

Mrs. Obama also was seemingly the only person *, out of the sixty one who spoke last night, who actually focused on the enemy the party faces.  The enemy isn’t Bernie Backers; the enemy isn’t Clintonistas like myself.  The enemy isn’t the DNC, it isn’t the incompetent Debbie Wasserman-Schulz, it isn’t the super delegates.

The enemy, fellow Democrats, is Donald J. Trump “House of Wings”.  Period.  Mr. Lincoln once famously noted that “a house divided against itself, cannot stand”.  It is absolutely ridiculous ** that the First Lady was apparently the only person in the palace once known as “Comcast Country” ***, who gets it.

--------------------

(*: I gotta admit, Sarah Silverman actually made me laugh last night.  I have never found her to be funny before, in any role or capacity.  I was laughing out loud during most of her time at the podium.)

(**: second best line of the night, Ms. Silverman to her fellow Bernie backers: “you look ridiculous!”)

(***: now called Wells Fargo Center.  Only the Democrats would hold a convention in an arena named for a major banking institution … when one of the key planks of the platform, is the destruction of the major banking institutions.)

--------------------

The most powerful speech of the night, was amongst the first, and came on almost at the same time as I got back to the Casa de Stevo and fired up CSPAN on the screen.  An eleven year old girl from Nevada, a legal United States citizen, who was born here to two illegal immigrants, pleading with the nation to come to its senses and have mercy on her and her family.  She noted the fear, the pure fear, she feels knowing that she might get home from school one day, to find her parents have been deported.

I personally strongly favor a path to permanent status for every illegal immigrant in this country that isn’t wanted by law enforcement for anything other than their illegal status.  I do NOT favor citizenship for that grouping of persons, but I do favor a permanent residency status, to prevent tragedies like needlessly tearing families apart.  On this point, I also loved Eva Longoria’s comment that “My family didn’t cross the border; the border crossed us!”, referencing the fact that Texas and most of the Southwest used to be a part of Mexico.

There has to be a common sense middle ground to the issue of illegal immigration.  You won’t get that common sense middle ground out of “House of Wings”.  You at least have a chance to get it, out of Secretary Clinton.

It figures that in an election in which both sides cannot descend into the sewer fast enough, it takes an eleven year old, to address the Captain Oats in the room.

Because of course an eleven year old, would act like the grown-up, in a 007 slapper fight between “House of Wings” and “Crooked” Hillary.

--------------------

The other speech I loved – and I mean loved – last night, was Senator Booker’s, which led into the First Lady’s comments.

Some are arguing against its effectiveness, given that he got pretty, uuh, fired up at times.  To which I say, so what?  What’s wrong with showing a little passion?  God forbid you speak like you believe in what you’re saying!  I know when I get into a discussion about something I’m passionate about – especially if I’m presenting my side of said something, and the person I’m speaking to disagrees with me?  I tend to get animated.  I tend to get loud.  I tend to get agitated.

Cory Booker last night, was agitated.  And it was awesome.

Because like it or not, Mr. Booker NAILED where this idea known as “American Exceptionalism” comes from:

“In this city, our founders put forth a Declaration of Independence, but let me tell you, they also made a historic declaration of interdependence.  They knew that if this country was to survive and thrive, we had to make an unusual and extraordinary commitment to each other.

Look, I respect and value the ideals of individualism and self-reliance.  But rugged individualism didn’t defeat the British!  It didn’t get us to the moon!  It didn’t build our nation’s highways!  Rugged individualism didn’t map the human genome!  We did that together!

(sk: I’m adding italics for the money shot)

And so this?  Is the high call of patriotism.  Patriotism is love of country.  But you can’t love your country, without loving your countrymen and countrywomen.  Now, we don’t always have to agree, but we must be there for each other, we must empower each other, we must find the common ground, and we must build bridges across our differences to pursue the common good!”

This, readers and readettes, is the one gigantic, fatal mistake “House of Wings” made last week, and I suppose it is to Secretary Clinton’s credit that she’s been hammering on his one letter / one word mistake ever since.

And that mistake?

Is the word “I”.

Nowhere in “House of Wings”’s speech did he reference “us”.  Did he reference “my fellow Americans”.  It was always “I”.  I will do this.  I will do that.  I will fix this.  I will repair that.

Most people above the age of three have figured out, no man is a messiah, and noone can go it alone and succeed.  “House of Wings” thinks he can solve 230 years of national issues by himself.  Good luck with that.  Because you can’t do it, anymore than George Washington could, anymore than Abraham Lincoln could, anymore than FDR or LBJ or Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama could.

I loved Mr. Booker’s speech.  I just really wish it had been given about forty eight hours later, than it actually was.

--------------------

What surprised me the most last night, was how utterly ineffective Senator Warren was.  She wasn’t “holy sh*t, Paul Simon is LOADED!!!!!!” **** ineffective, but that was the biggest dud of the night, bar none.  There was no passion, there was no drive.  She was just … there.  I expected better.

I thought we got out of Crazy Drunk Uncle Bernie exactly what we expected – a total sellout and betrayal of his voters.  You don’t mess with the Clinton’s, pal.  Ask Vince Foster.  Ask Ron Brown.  Ask Bob Torticelli.  Ask any of Bill’s “youthful indiscretions”.  If there are two people in this country you don’t f*ck with, it is William Jefferson and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Although there was a hysterical moment, when the camera panned the floor, and it focused in on Susan Sarandon, who looked about as happy to be there as I look when I’m forced to go to Mass once a year for Christmukkah.  (Namely, looking anything other than “just happy to be here”, in the words of Stevo’s Site Numero Dos’ Color Commentator Emeritus, Dan Dierdorf.)

Overall, for night one, it wasn’t bad.  Just like the Republicans on Night One, the “powers that be” managed to hold the rebellion to a minimum, and to pretty much confine it to the afternoon cession, when nobody is paying attention anyway.

Now comes the real challenge – there’s no more cow-towing to Bernie and his bums.  There’s no more peace offerings being offered.  They were given most of night one.  They’re not getting nights three or four.

And with former President Clinton as your keynote tonight (along with Clintonista loyalist Governor Terry McAuliffe of Virginia – which is THE state that will decide this election, 104 days out)?  They’re not getting night dos either.

So congrats, you Bernie bums.  Your “revolution” got you exactly one night at a national convention.  It did NOT get you a nomination for either major slot.  It did NOT get you the elimination of “super delegates”, it did NOT get you damned near anything you wanted into the party platform, it got you literally nothing.  You sold your soul, your integrity, your everything, not only to a man who stabbed you in the back when the moment mattered?  But you have literally NOTHING to show for your efforts, save for one semi-coherent speech in which your messiah literally threw you under the bus, for the one thing you professed to hate above all others.

That magical place formerly known as “Dustyland”?  Has never been defined more perfectly – you Bernie bums sold everything, to get nothing in return!

Other than the loss of everything you swore mattered to you.

“Tell me lies!  Tell me sweet little lies!”

“Oh no, no!  You can’t disguise!  No, you can’t disguise!”

You’d better come home to the base this fall, Bernie bums.  Us PUMA Democrats, for the most part, swallowed hard and choked down the last eight years.  Now it’s your turn.

And if you think failing Secretary Clinton come November isn’t going to be remembered forever, by Secretary Clinton and her supporters (of which I am a die-hard one)?

Then kids?

Let me tell you about a former Secretary of State by the name of Ron Brown …

--------------------

(****: he was beyond sh*t faced drunk last night.  Sorry.  It happens.)

--------------------

Three last points:

1. I think tonight is THE biggest mistake either side has made to date.  America does not want to see a bunch of mothers of murdered criminals and thugs on their television screens.  And sorry, Black Lives Murder Matter, but “The Gentle Giant” was shot after robbing a convenience store.  Freddie Gray died because he resisted arrest after a credible crime, and last time I checked, your movement is OH FOR FOUR at getting a conviction (and deservedly so).  Trayvon Martin beat the sh*t out of George Zimmerman, before Mr. Zimmerman did what any person with an IQ above the pavement his head was bouncing off of, would do.

NOBODY wants to hear this, other than the race-baiters and people looking for a reason to loot and/or riot.

(Which reminds me, I need a new TV.  Feel free to riot on South Blue Ridge Boulevard tonight, folks!  In the words of the late Jack Buck: “go crazy folks!  Go crazy!”)

(And which also reminds me, sweet Jesus, do NOT take that previous () seriously.  In the perfect words of Ms. Silverman last night: “stop being ridiculous”!)

2. I also think having Bill go tonight, is a GIGANTIC mistake.  I get wanting Chelsea to introduce Hillary on Thursday, if only because it counters the incredible fellating Ivanka gave her father a week ago.

But let’s be honest here – who do you truly want introducing Hillary Rodham Clinton to the nation, as our potential next President?  Her daughter … or the (at worst) second greatest President of most of us reading this’ lifetimes?

And finally ...

3. 61 speakers last night.  Not ONE mention of "evil in our time", aka ISIS.  I fear this is going to turn into 2004 again -- especially after a solid Night One last night.  You remember 2004?  When for three days and a few hours, my party successfully convinced the country it was still September 10, 2001.  Then Senator Kerry "reported for duty", and spent an hour laying out foreign policy as his major selling point.  I still remember, I turned to "The Voice of Reason" when that speech was over and simply said "he just sh*t all over his convention.  He's going to lose."

(Other than that whole Aaron Rodgers or DJ debate with "Mr. Reason" from Draft Day 2005?  That might be my finest moment in prognosticating.  Also, there's at least a 22.46% chance I remembered that night in August 2004 wrong, and it was "Mr. Reason" who noted Mr. Kerry just took a gigantic squat on his convention.  Either way, we were both right on that one -- Mr. Kerry lost the election because of that speech.  I fear Hillary is going to make the same mistake forty eight hours from now.)

I’ll be back at some point tomorrow to recap Night Dos.  I am dreading this night like few convention nights ever.  This is going to be an utter disaster … at least until the networks resume coverage at 9pm CT, and what passes as "The Voice of Reason" in the modern Democrat Party takes the podium to close the night down …

rnc night one: the look back

"For each man in his time?  Is king.
Until he walks along the beach,
And sees his future in the water --
A long lost heart?  Within his reach.

And all I ever needed?  Was the one!
Like freedom fields, where wild horses run!
When stars collide, like you and I?
No shadows block the sky!

You're all I ever needed --
Baby?  You're the one! ..."

-- "The One" by Sir Elton John.

--------------------

(Note: I'll update with links later.  I am posting this at work, and Youtube!, Twitter, and for some reason, the Republican National Convention site, are all blocked.)

--------------------

Let's just begin with the obvious, shall we?

"House of Wings" arrival.

Sweet merciful Lord Jesus.  Ric Flair was jealous of that intro.  Ditto "The People's Champion".  It was so self-absorbed, so attention-grabbing ... I mean, not even the sweet merciful Messiah Himself's entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday was as ridiculous, arrogant, and "look at me, I have "big hands"!" over the top, as much as "House of Wings" arrival on the stage was last night.  I literally spit out the frosty cold Coors Light I was enjoying, I was laughing so hard at the moment.  You want to talk about self-fellation?  That was it.  "House of Wings" went full-on down on himself last night.

And I absolutely loved it.  The sh*t eating grin as "House of Wings" stepped to the podium, the "f*ck you, elephants!" triumphant moment?  It was just awesome.  I mean, not even Al Gore was as thrust-deep with Tipper in 2000, as The Donald was with himself last night.

And the absolute sh*t eating "suck it, delegates!" grin of arrogance and defiance?  Jesus.  Just awesome.  I guarantee you even Jesus was laughing at that spectacle last night.  How could He not?  How could any sane person NOT enjoy the hell out of that moment?

Plus -- Queen?  Really?  The party that refused to put equality for all in its' platform, is introducing its' nominee's wife to a tune by one of the most unquestioningly gay dudes to ever occupy a stage?  I mean, (keyshawn johnson voice) come on man!

I guess you gotta give "House of Wings" this -- the man does know how to make an entrance.  A spectacular one, at that.

--------------------

Rudy Giuliani.

I suppose in the interest of fairness, that I should disclose that I'm not a big fan of His Honor.  Having a tragedy occur on your watch does not make you a hero.  If it did, Abe Beame would be fondly remembered for his four years in Gracie Mansion, rather than reviled for decimating the NYPD so thoroughly that Son of Sam ran free on the streets of New York for the last twelve months of his reign of error.  Simply drawing breath and not being utterly and completely incompetent in the face of unexpected terror doesn't make you a hero in my book.  It makes you normal.

Having said that ... was that one fun speech last night or what?  It kind of reminded me of "Left Liberal" Governor Granholm at the DNC four years ago.  (And that was one epic speech too.)

After a day of literal floor fighting, internal squabbling, and ridiculous tomfoolery and hijinks, the delegates needed to be woke up.  I mean, when even the crazy Texans can't generate excitement, you know it's a boring evening.  (Note: the Texas delegation -- at either convention -- is always the funnest to watch during the breaks in the action.  They all dress in something ridiculous, and just enjoy the hell out of the bottle evening.)  And man, did His Honor deliver last night.

That was the most scathing, blistering attack I believe I've ever heard a Republican deliver on Secretary Clinton.  (And long overdue -- again, I offer no defense whatsoever for Benghazi.  You can't defend the indefensible, so why even try.)  He spared no punches.  Hell, if I wasn't already in the tank for Hillary, I could have possibly been talked into listening to what "House of Wings" is selling with at least one ear and half an eye open.  The Republicans need to do more of this.  This is the message "House of Wings" can win with -- attack her record.  Attack her resume.  Because even I have to admit, there's a few gaping holes in that bad boy, that can be used against her.

--------------------

Lt. General Michael Flynn.

Boring.  Boring, boring, boring.  I would think, if Reince and "House of Wings" could do it over again, they'd have flipped the General and His Honor, and let Rudy bring the night down.  Whatever positive buzz Rudy and Mrs. "House of Wings" engendered in the delegates (and yes, we're getting to her eventually), was destroyed by this flat, boring, not even remotely interesting speech.  Hell, at one point, I figured I'd flip through the stations to see who was still carrying this thing live.  I mean, it's the final speech of the night.  Surely at least one network had it live, right?

FOX?  Didn't check.
FOX News?  Nope -- round table.
CBS?  Nope -- Scott Pelley and Gloria Borger discussing Melania's speech.
ABC?  Nope -- round table led by George Stephanopoulus discussing Rudy's speech.
NBC?  Didn't check.
MSNBC?  Nope -- round table co-led by Rachel Maddow and Brian "I Do Make This Sh*t Up!" Williams.
CNN?  Nope -- ridiculous round table *.

(*: if you haven't seen the pictures of this thing, search Twitter or Google.  They were NINE PEOPLE DEEP at one point!  Nine people slammed around an anchor desk designed for three, maybe four at the most.  (jim mora jr voice) It was really neat!)

No matter your political persuasion (and let's face it, 5 of those 7 networks lean left, one leans right, and one drunken stumbles all over the place), when every single network is saying "uuh, no thanks" to what you're selling?  You probably made a mistake.

And in case you think me and the networks were the only ones bored to tears?  I flipped it up to CSPAN, and you could see the delegates streaming for the open bar and or adult entertainment venues exits.

Which brings me to ...

--------------------

Melania Trump.

Let's deal with the Captain Oats in the room first, shall we?  Do I think she blatantly stole a paragraph or two from Michelle Obama's speech eight years ago in Denver?  Hell yes I do.  Do I care?  Hell no, I do not.

Because I was damned impressed with her last night.

I cannot even imagine the fear she had to be overcoming.  It's fairly well known Mrs. "House of Wings" is not a fan of the public spotlight, she's not the most prolific public speaker you'll ever meet, and given that she has an understandable Eastern European accent, can be difficult to understand at times.  I understood every word she said last night.

You know what honestly and truly was my only thought as Mrs. "House of Wings" was speaking?  (Other than "dammit, the dugout's empty!", of course?)  Look at what "House of Wings" has managed to accomplish.  The Republican National Convention is being keynoted by an immigrant chick who is truly the embodiment of the American Dream as the world knows it.  If you had told me six months ago that the keynote speaker on any night at the RNC would be anyone other than a rich white dude who could star in a Fidelity ad, I'd have laughed you out of the room.  Congratulations, Republicans, on entering the 1990s.  It's just a damned shame that come Thursday night, you're officially stuck with a candidate who wants to return this nation to the 1950s **.

--------------------

(**: here's the dirty little secret neither side will ever have the balls to admit.  The economic and industrial boom of the 1950s?  Occurred for one reason, and one reason only.  And that is the unquestionable fact that since 2/3rds of the industrialized world laid in (stewie griffin voice) roo-eens after World War II, the United States had to fill the vacuum that the devastation in Europe and Asia created.  Once Germany, Japan, and southeast Asia rebuilt?  Go figure, by the early 1960s, American industry began the very predictable decline to its more normal level.  There's your history lesson for today, kids.  You're welcome.)

--------------------

Night Two's theme is "Making America Work Again".  This, peoples and peepettes, is the night that really doesn't matter much.  "House of Wings" can't attack Secretary Clinton on the economy -- she's not responsible for it.  And furthermore, does The Donald really want to open that door?  I mean, I do believe Hillary's husband knows a thing or three about how to fix a roo-eened economy.  I think Hillary's husband has a clue on how to not only balance a budget, but generate a surplus to boot.

The speaker lineup is, quite frankly, not inspiring.  Mitch McConnell usually makes watching paint dry sound fun.  Paul Ryan is a decent speaker, but given that 2/3rds of the base can't stomach him for daring to do his job and try to work with the President, rather than obstruct everything, his remarks aren't likely to play well.  I don't care what Tiffany Trump or Donnie Junior have to say.  I've never watched a second of UFC fighting in my life, and I never will, so putting Dana White up there does nothing for me.  Ditto whoever this female golfer is.  And while I'm genuinely excited to see a casino mogul get a speaking spot at the Republican convention, what's his advice on how to grow the economy -- find the lowest common denominator out there, and put a slot machine and a pack of Marlboro's in front of them for two hours?

I mean, when the night's highlight is probably going to be wagering on if Chris Christie has food on his tie when he's wheeled out to talk, you're not looking at a promising night.

Oh well.  Maybe a night of peace and quiet is a good thing.

Or maybe "House of Wings" will finally force Reince and the boys to back down, and allow THE true economic moneymaker in Cleveland, to have the high honor and privilege of opening his mouth, and addressing the delegates.  We Want (Don) King!  We Want (Don) King!  I mean, you talk about made in America ...

the rnc: night one, live blog ...

Hi folks!

Well ... you get a live blog, at least for a while tonight.

Enjoy?

--------------------

* This “Duck Dynasty” guy is an “everyday American”?  If that’s what everyday America looks like?  I want no part of it.  Dude.  Buy a razor.  Even I can manage to keep the beard groomed.

And this whole idea that “well, we pray to end each day, at the table”.  Well sh*t, so do I and my friends and family at “The Family Dinner” every Sunday night.  I have a feeling it’s not going to do us a damned bit of good, when we have to stand before the face of God someday.  Call me crazy.  But when the whiskey / wine to sandwich ratio is about even?  Probably not worth wasting the words, on said prayer.

* Scott Baio was good.  I liked his speech.  I hated his “Never Hillary” line, but whatever.

* My dad’s brother – who has lived in Texas for longer than I’ve been alive – hates Rick Perry with a passion.  (In my uncle’s defense?  I can’t stand that f*cking phony either.)  Having said that …

* His introduction of Marcus Luttrell was inspiring, and Mr. Luttrell’s speech on what true heroism and patriotism is, was awesome.  I loved that it didn’t sound like a speech.  He was just speaking from the heart.

* The mother of Sean Smith.  Damn.  “Hillary Clinton is a woman, a mother, and a grandmother of two.  I am a woman, a mother, and a grandmother of two.  How could she do this to me?”  This, after flat out saying “Hillary Clinton is a liar”.  I … I got nothing folks.  I’m not even going to try to defend Benghazi.

“If Hillary Clinton can’t give us the truth?  Why should we give her the Presidency?”

“That’s right – Hillary Clinton for prison!  She deserves to be in stripes!”

I … I got nothing folks.  I’m not even going to try to defend Benghazi.

Although this lady did note that “I’ve been waiting four years for her to return my (phone call).  Is she too scared to talk?”  Gee, who does THAT sound like?

Wolf Blitzer after that speech: “I think a theme is developing”.  Well, considering the Republicans called this “Benghazi Night”, I think the theme was already known, Wolf.  Christ.

Why Jake Tapper Is The Best Journalist Alive Today: he’s not even trying to attack Mrs. Smith … or defend HRC.  (Or me at this point.)

Mr. Tapper also is all but confirming Mrs. Smith’s accusation, that Mrs. Clinton is a liar.  Which, again, she is.  And yet, compared to Mr. Trump, she’s slightly less pathological of one, in my opinion.

‘Murica 2016!!!!!!!  Who lies to you less!!!!!!!!!

Jesus, we are so f*cked as a nation at this point, you have to question the sanity of anyone who wants to bring another kid into this world, as an American.

* Guess I should note, I have CNN on one TV, MSNBC on a second, CSPAN on the personal laptop, and I’m typing this on the work laptop.

(Pause).

‘Murica 2016!!!!!!!!!  Greatest Nation Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

* Still to come: Antonio Sabato Junior (really?), Rudy Giuliani (Jesus, give it up already, we get it – you weren’t sound asleep at 8:58am ET on 9/11/01), Senator Ernst (I actually like her), Milwaukee’s Sheriff (this could be interesting), and “House of Wings” introducing his trophy wife (who, actually, I like a lot too … and my fear is, she’s going to hit this tonight to (reggie jackson voice) second f*cking base.  Basically, the Bizarro Teresa Heinz-Kerry from 12 years ago.)

And if CNN is going to a break … so am I.  Back in (chuck woolery voice) two and two …

--------------------

And I'm back.  Tonight's fuel of choice is Coors Light.  Coors Light: where I'm exactly one twelve pack away -- in barely two weeks! -- from cashing in enough points for a mini-fridge!

Media Isn't Biased 101: neither CNN nor MSNBC is showing the Benghazi survivors live.  Again ... I got nothing folks.  I'm not even going to try to defend Benghazi.

Oh boy, it's Rudy time apparently ... only CNN goes to a commercial.  MSNBC already is in one.  I guaran-godd*mn-tee you, if Benghazi happened under W's watch, we wouldn't be at commercial.

Guess this is a decent time to come that much closer, to a mini-fridge ...

--------------------

Oh, a couple disclaimers.

(1) I'm too damned cheap to pay for a live blog, uuh, live blog.  So keep hitting F5, and every 10 minutes or so, you'll get an updated, uuh, blog.

(2) I also live within a mile of the Cerner redevelopment in South KC.  I routinely lose WiFi (and electricity ... and water ... and for a lovely week and a half last winter, sewer) access from time to time.  So if it takes me a minute to reload, I apologize.

But if you lived in District Six?

You'd tolerate it like I do.

Because God bless, this part of town is going to be worth living in again, come 18 months from now ...

--------------------

OK, what in the hell is David Axelrod doing at the RNC?  I mean Christ, can you even ATTEMPT to be unbiased, CNN?

I mean, is FOX going to have Karl Rove on their coverage?

(Pause).

Oh.

Guess I'll let this one slide ...

--------------------

For the grizzled veterans this is unnecessary ... but if you've drunken Google or stoned Twitter stumbled onto this site, welcome!

I'll live blog until I either (a) get too bored to do it, or (b) get so inspired that I want to just watch the convention unfold.  (Go to August 2012 and August 2008 in the sites archives, to see that I mean that.)

I'm guessing tonight, (a) is going to happen.  Because this is beyond boring right now.

Having said that ... Mr. Axelrod is actually quite fair and balanced so far tonight.  I'm utterly stunned.

And ... Antonio Sabada Junior.  As CNN notes "Former Underwear Model".  And he's concerned about our country's future.

(stevo banging his head on his coffee table ...)

I mean really?  THIS is who you open 9pm ET with, a "former underwear model"?

I'm ... I'm ... I'm ...

"Donald Trump is for unity!"  Yeah, and I'm for sobriety.

Wait -- a speaker at the REPUBLICAN convention just said government has responsibility?  I thought government was the great evil in the room?

What a waste.  They should have put Scott Baio here.  Sh*t, they should have put Don King here; it couldn't have been worse.

--------------------

I almost hate to do this, but Live Blog Night Uno is over.  Just got a call I have to take that is gonna take at least thirty minutes.

You'll have my thoughts on Mrs. Trump's speech tomorrow, as well as anything else that occurs.

the rnc: the setup ...

"You said come just as you are --
Skin and bones, smell like a bar.
You sure you want me there this way?
OK -- I'm on my way.

I'll grab this bottle just in case?
I'm just too ashamed to pray.
Well I'm bringing this burden to you now --
Yeah, the prodigal son returns,

The only way I know how.

The only way I know how! ...

So may this bottle?
Be the body!
And this bourbon?
Be the blood!

If I pour it out,
Will you take my offer --
If you give me the strength,
To never pick it up?

Then here I stand!

Just as I am ..."

-- "Just As I Am" by Brantley Gilbert.  Yeah folks -- I'm gonna need both God and booze, to get through this convention.  And not necessarily in that order ...

--------------------

This election feels strange for me.

For starters, for the first time since 2000, the Conventions dawn with my vote already locked up.  Usually I give both parties my attention for the week, listening to what the candidates have to offer, and then make my decision based on who I believe is not only the best choice to lead the country, but ideally the candidate that is the most centrist of the group.  This year?  There's nothing to sell me; my choice is already made.  #ImWithHer

Secondly, and I ask this as someone who actually believes (and has for a long time) that Secretary Clinton will prove to be a better President than her husband was ... but have two worse candidates ever topped the ticket than Secretary Clinton and "House of Wings"?  Love her or hate her, even I have to concede that Secretary Clinton is a horrible candidate.  She's not charismatic like her husband (or "House of Wings") is.  She isn't the warmest, most engaging person when the camera is on her.  And she's not any good at speaking on the fly, at adapting to the conditions around her once she begins speaking.  (Her husband on the other hand?  Literally winged the State of the Union one year from memory when the teleprompter crashed.)

So she has her flaws.  But at least she's not the "star" of this brilliant attack ad:

So, here's kind of the plan for the week ...

1. I doubt I will live blog tonight  I do plan to have a recap and my reactions, at a bare minimum, to Mrs. Trump's speech tomorrow.  I'll try to get it posted by lunch CT, so you have something to entertain you in the afternoon tomorrow.

2. Tuesday will have to be recapped, not live blogged, at this point.  I currently have plans for tomorrow that I don't think I can get out of.  And even if I could, it would just delay what I have to do by a week ... and I don't care how train-wrecky the RNC looks at this point * & **, because nothing's going to top next Tuesday at the DNC.  It's Bernie's night.  Jesus, I would not want to be within 500 miles of Philadelphia next Tuesday.  His brain dead supporters probably think Comcast Country is a real country that they can mooch off of.

3. I do plan to live blog on Wednesday and Thursday for a bit.  And I will be scrutinizing both Governor Pence and "House of Wings" offerings to the masses.  (Or basically, what I usually do for every night of the conventions on this site -- hit the highlights of each night, and recap the keynote speech.

--------------------

(*: the New York Times is reporting that Reince Priebus, the RNC Chairman, had to explain to Mr. Trump why Don King would not be allowed to speak this week.  (He stomped a man to death in Ohio years ago.)  I'm not sure what's more insane: that Don King is a Republican ... or that Don King was supposed to speak at a political convention.  I mean, are you serious?  How awesome would that have been?  I mean, usually it's the DNC that gives us the ridiculousness ***.  Don King on stage would have been the mic-drop moment of American political history.  Bar none.)

(**: for those who think this week is going to be a loony tunes carnival, I remind you, it wasn't even four years ago when Clint Eastwood spoke to a chair for twenty minutes.  Other than Don King miraculously being re-inserted into the speaking lineup, the Republicans aren't topping that beauty from Tampa last time around.)

(***: in 2000, Reverend Jackson urged us to "stay out the Bush!  Stay out the Bush!" ... mere days before it was revealed that he failed to adhere to his own advice, and had knocked a chick up who wasn't Mrs. Reverend Jackson.  In 2004, Vice President Biden was booed off the stage for quoting a verse from the Bible.  Also in 2004, the floor nearly rioted when the Boy Scouts performed the National Anthem.  And as if that wasn't great enough, 2004 also gave us Reverend Sharpton railing for twelve minutes about how President Bush had taken his "40 acre and mule" from him.  Uuh, Al?  I don't know how to tell you this ... but the government hasn't handed out "40 acre and mule" in 150 years.  And of course, anything with Senator Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA ... as in Drunk - Massachusetts).  Who can forget in 2000, when poor "Sweet" Caroline had to literally help him off the podium in Los Angeles because he was not only too intoxicated to walk, he was too intoxicated to coherently talk.  Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout, Willis!  Then again, three of the five best political speeches I've ever heard were delivered at the DNC -- President Obama's keynote speech in 2004, Al Gore's acceptance speech in 2000, and President Clinton in Charlotte four years ago, so it's not all fun and games, I guess.)

--------------------

For the record, I plan to do the same thing for the DNC next week -- at least recap every day, and the major speeches: Secretary Clinton, her Vice Presidential choice (who I'm betting will be Senator Kaine), plus anything Presidents Clinton and Obama have to say.  And God bless, do I truly hope and pray that for the first time since 2004, the "Justice Brothers", Reverends Jackson and Sharpton, will be welcomed back onto the stage.  Damned Barry not wanting to get upstaged the last two conventions ...

And of course, keep in mind -- next week is likely the last national speech Joseph Robinette Biden will ever give.  One last time, for old times sake:

Now, having gotten the necessities out of the way, here's my thoughts (in case you care) headed into the Conventions:

1. I think this race is going to be very, very close.  Both with the popular vote and the electoral.  If you go to Real Clear Politics, and simply take the "Lock and Lean" Clinton against the "Lock and Lean" Trump, it's already 209-164 HRC.  Or basically where President Obama was at this point four years ago.  But consider this: if "House of Wings" **** manages to win the three vital swing states he currently leads in -- Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania -- that puts him at 228.  I know they aren't in the lean category and are still officially toss-ups, but Mr. Trump is going to win Georgia and Arizona, another 27 electoral votes to put him at 255.  You know what that means?

North Carolina would put him over the top.

Virginia would all but get him there.

Anyone who thinks this is going to be a cakewalk for Secretary Clinton, is nuts.

(****: gun to my head, "Donald J. Trump's House of Wings" is one of the ten best SNL sketches ever.)

2. The person with the most pressure on them the next two weeks?  Easy -- Hillary.

Look it, love or hate "House of Wings" (I feel neither ... but there's no way I'll vote for him), the man can speak.  Thursday night is going to be the most watched political speech in a generation, and The Donald will deliver.  It will be entertaining.  It will be engaging.  It will be utter bullsh*t and lies, but hey, so was hope and change, and 50 plus percent of the idiot electorate bought it up -- twice.  I've seen Hillary give a truly quality speech once in my life: the concession speech to end her 2008 campaign.  That's it.  She's not a natural entertainer or comedian.  Trump is.

And as if not being a natural salesman / politician isn't enough of a handicap ... who isn't going to overshadow her next week?

And more to the point -- can she afford for Bill to be corralled?  Can she afford to not give a night to Bernie and his bat sh*t crazy supporters?  Can she afford to not turn over a night to the Senator Warren crowd?  For all the talk about how "House of Wings" has to unify a broken party?  So does the Madam Secretary.  And if anything, her task might be tougher, if only because at the end of the day, the far right will rally to "House of Wings" to avoid a Hillary administration.  Bernie's bat sh*t crazy supporters might be angry enough to stay home or switch.

Put it this way: she has nowhere to go but down.  He has nowhere to go but up.

3. Am I the only one frightened by the fact that "House of Wings" has literally spent $0.00 in the last six weeks on advertising ... and he's still within the margin for error?  By this point in 2012, President Obama's team had brilliantly painted Willard as an uncaring asshole who threw his dog on the roof of the car for a cross-country drive.  The ad I liked too, way up at the top, that's just brilliant.  And it's not even making a dent!

4. I thought the selection of Governor Pence was the only sane option "House of Wings" had.  Chris Christie would have been a disaster -- if you're trying to unify the party, you sure as hell do not put on the ticket a man whose embrace of President Obama after Hurricane Sandy enraged two thirds of the base.  Newt Gingrich would have been worse -- if you're trying to unify the party, sure as as all hell do not put on the ticket a man who left his wife for a staffer ... and announced he was leaving as she was fighting cancer.  Governor Pence is on the wrong side of history when it comes to true equality, but other than that, I don't have an issue with him.  And even on gay rights?  Let's be honest here folks: DOMA was signed into law by a Democrat, and it took President Obama decades to "evolve" on the issue.  It's not like Democrats "own" being on the right side of history here either.

And finally …

5. I'm getting godd*mned sick and tired of having to text my great friend Jasson every morning "be safe today dude", because yet another law enforcement officer was shot overnight.  I'm getting really godd*mned sick and tired of it.  Stop shooting cops, people.  They're our ONLY line of defense between civilization and anarchy.  (Unless you want martial law.  In the words of Bartleby in Herman Melville's classic: "I'd prefer not to".)

Stop.  Shooting.  Cops.

Period.

No matter what your grievances with law enforcement may be -- and trust me, I've spent a night or six dealing with them -- they're not waking up in the morning looking to kill you, Black Lives Matter.

Yet you wake up, seeking to kill them.

Just stop already.

If only for Jasson's sake ...
