the week four predictions

"Midnight.
Not a sound from the pavement.
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone ...

In the lamplight,
The withered leaves collect at my feet,
And the wind
Begins to moan ...

Memory!
All alone in the moonlight!
I can dream of the old days!
Life was beautiful then ...

I remember the time I knew
What happiness was,
Let the memory
Live again ..."

-- "Memory", from the musical "Cats", created by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The Chiefs Prediction:

Sunday is going to suck.

Not just because we're going to bend over and assume the position. On the field, its going to be uglier than anything Mackenzie Phillips has alleged in the last few weeks. Its going to be brutal, probably unwatchable.

But off the field, that's where its gonna hurt.

Five years ago come Monday, we lost one of, if not the, founding father of the Arrowhead Experience as we know it. Or at least as I know it.

Sunday, a lot of the regulars won't be there. For an obvious reason: NASCAR. (Steve rant: I will NEVER understand why NASCAR and the NFL can't get together on this. Run the race on a Saturday night, and Chiefs in the 3:15 slot on Sunday against a huge national opponent. Its so simple, it apparently makes too much sense to ever occur.)

Usually, NASCAR Sunday at the Speedway means good things for the Chiefs. Believe it or not, the Chiefs are 6-0 on NASCAR at the Speedway weekend.

(We had byes in 2004 and 2005 on race weekend.)

In 2001, we rolled the Redskins in a huge upset. In 2002, we destroyed the unbeaten Dolphins at Arrowhead. We won the battle of the unbeatens in 2003 against denver on Dante's punt return. We beat the 49ers at Arrowhead in 2006 to jumpstart our last playoff season. We stunned San Diego in 2007 in Qualcomm, and we won one of the funnest games I've ever been to against denver at Arrowhead last year.

This year, with the karma surrounding this game, I don't see it happening.

Its that "bye" in 2004 that keeps coming back to me. What I failed to see at the time. What many of us, who so loved the guy, failed to see at the time. What haunts some of us to this day.

If you're there Sunday, feel free to head down by me in 132. The better the moral support, the better. I suspect it will be ugly both on and off the field.

Giants (-8 1/2) 31, Chiefs 20. It'll be competitive for a while, but get out of hand come the 4th quarter.
